SRAM eTAP AXS fans, here ya' go

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's been a heated discussion about it so far. I was happy to read about it this morning but then all the industry people started in when they checked out wholesale pricing on everything. Complete train wreck there. If these aren't just introductory pricing models and these prices are here to stay then it would begin to imply that SRAM has intentions to move away from dealer support and possibly go customer direct.

It's bad. Really poor margins that would almost make it toxic to touch it as a dealer.

Enough that I decided to sit on the sidelines and worry about it when it eventually comes across the stand.

The nice part is it looks like they are starting to fix what were known issues with eTap. The power meter is a joke. Any powermeter that "wears out through normal use" and has to be replaced at the same time the chainrings are replaced is product suicide IMHO.

Chainrings....just happens to have the powermeter attached to them though....

That bit is going to not work well for them.

Do you really think people spending $5000 on a groupset give a crap about spending $500 on a chairing every 5 years? Besides nobody says you have to use Sram's power meter setup with this groupset.

12 speed will be irrelevant 5 years on. We'll be on to 15 speed cassettes by then. Shifting linked directly to the human brain via microchip wi-fi 10G.

I thought I heard that the first chainring replacement will be half price? Anyway, my issue with this is the fact Sram announced NO firmware upgrade to the existing Red Etap. When I bought mine I assumed that some automatic shift option and other enhancements would come along as it's only software programming, right? Looks like that's not happening and scrapping an over 3k setup with an already D Zero power meter for a close to 5k new setup is not going to happen. BTW I do love my Etap but if I outlast it (I'm an old-fart) and Sram does not change this policy, my next setup will NOT be Sram. They are forgetting the old "dance with the one that brought you" rule. They are also missing the boat on a potential revenue stream by charging a modest amount for software upgrades that offer better performance/value to their existing hardware. Hope I'm wrong about the no firmware upgrade but fear I'm not.

It's taken Shimano 15 years to go from 10 to barely 12 speed.

SRAM didn't have a road group until '06 but still for them 13 years to go from 10 to 12. At that rate we're looking at 18-20 years before we barely hit 15 speed.

Before that 7 speed was apparently '80 for Dura Ace. 8 Speed was '87-'88 ish. 1990 was STI intro which was formal 8 speed for Dura Ace and Ultegra. 9- Speed was introduced in 1996. 2003/4 was 10 speed introduction. 2013/2014 was 11 speed 9100 group.

In all it took Dura Ace 40 years to go from 5->11 speed.

It seems much more frequent than it actually is. Someone will no doubt come along and talk about how Campy was first.
