Mushroom pins

When you have these pins on a chain can they be pushed out and back in to repair a chain? I tried two chains today with two different chain breaker tools and was not able to get the pin out. I had to cut both chains with lock cutters.

Also can anyone recommend a good replacement chain. Need one for 8 speed and one for 9 speed. Thanks!

ps. I have pushed out pins and repaired a chain before so not my first time.

Removing "riveted" pins from 8, 9 or 10-speed chains using any decent chain tool is not difficult but you do have to be sure the chain tool pin is lined up properly with the chain's pin. If you had trouble that's probably the reason.

You do not want to reuse a pin from 8+-speed chains. Either use a specific joining pin (Shimano) or a master link (every other maker) to reconnect it.

Problem Is you Stretch the hole in the chain side plate to get the pin out ... So..

the best idea only shorten, use a quick link & more of the same chain,,

there are re riveting chain tools .. you can buy.. not all do that.

If you order through a bike shop, they will demonstrate how to use it, too..

Back in the 5,6 speed era the pin head stuck out more .... now those chains are relegated to single speed & IGH use..

Not really pertinent, but this thread makes me want to say ... I see some guys talk in here about removing and cleaning their chains after each ride. When I see that I think, "You must have a lot of time on your hands", and mostly "You must not be running Campy", at $8-$10 a pop for those pins, or more if you snap the precious things while you're pressing them in, plus maybe a chain-tool pin or two.
