Injury

Hey Everyone.

I've been having some lower back pain and my doc said I have an inflammed sacroiliac joint (between the hip and the pelvis). I've turned a corner with the back pain, but doc says no jogging, only cycling, swimming, and other exercises more gentle on the back (I have a history of back issues from childhood). She also suggested applying heat and getting a massage.

So, I'm going to meet with my physical trainer to assess my current situation, and decide what to do next (that is, get some kind of clearance from someone with know-how before I start riding). I'm also looking into the swimming and massage part.

This has been a discouraging setback as I was just starting to get some momentum and exercise almost every day. But I'm trying to get the momentum back. Thanks for letting me write.

Jessica

Aren’t those nagging, long term injuries miserable? It sounds like you’re using your head and getting the help you need. If swimming works for you then by all means go for it. Some of the most physically fit people I know are avid swimmers.

Hang in there!

A couple years back, I had a heel spur removed, and my achilles tendon repaired. As I was non-weightbearing, I had access to a knee scooter. Well. I was not slow or easy on it. As a result, I got my sacroiliac joints out of whack, but only noticed when I was done with it. It was agonizing! S I feel your pain! Swimming helped a great deal. And physical therapy did the rest. Good luck, and hope you feel better soon!!!

Thanks for your responses, this is very encouraging. I got away from swimming many years ago after a viral ear infection gave me some vertigo. But I haven't had any vertigo symptoms for a long time, so looking forward to giving swimming another chance. I remember enjoying swimming quite a lot as a kid..... same as riding a bike! In fact, most of my interest in bike riding as an adult is an attempt to capture the fun I remember having on a bike as a kid. Maybe swimming would be a good fit for me for the same reason. Hmm.

Great news! Over the past three days I've seen a lot of improvement, and yesterday at my appointment with the physical trainer, I did about 45 minutes of exercises with no pain. I'm still stiff and sore in the hip area, but I feel really encouraged. Thanks.
