Cellphone spam

I just got new phone number with a new service provider (MintMobile). Now I'm getting 5 spam phone call per day. Very annoying.
My previous T-mobile number, I average only 1 spam call per week.

How much phone spam do you get?

Usually 1 to 2 calls a day, and Mr. Number blocks some of them.

I get many. I just don't answer them because I pay by the minute. I set my ringtones different from those on my contact list and those that aren't.

I submitted a request to be removed from spammer lists at www.donotcall.gov.

I hope it helps.

I hate not answering calls. You never know if it is really important.

With my previous cell I had a remote area code on the prairie. I had one spam call. The inconvenience was dialling the area code for all calls.

Sure you do;
If they leave a message, (and it is not a robocall), then it was important. It takes only a minute to call back.
If they don't leave a message, then it was not important.
I never answer a number that is not in my contact list.

It's a widely reported and escalating problem.

The FCC is trying to figure out a solution that won't cause other problems. For example, most telemarketers are spoofing numbers -- pretending to be calling from a local number. It doesn't do any good to block the apparent number because that's not the actual source of the call. And it might block a wanted caller later from someone local who gets that number.

But call masking is a potentially useful tool with legitimate uses. For example, a women's shelter might use call masking to disguise the source of calls from residents so they won't be harassed or targeted for retaliation.

And more women professionals are needing caller ID masking to protect themselves from harassment. Many doctors and professionals in health and social services are using caller ID masking since they often deal with volatile and sometimes abusive clients and patients. I've noticed this the past year when scheduling medical appointments through the VA. The doctors are all contractors, not VA employees. I can call the VA directly but not the doctors. If the doctors call me directly usually their caller ID is masked, so I have to answer every call. And I can't call them back because the number given is not the real number. Some doctors will trust some patients with their real cell phone numbers, but most don't. It's unfortunate that this is necessary but too many people believe they have a right to harass and threaten other people, and that this is covered under "free speech." So the majority of us who behave like we grew up in a civilized society are inconvenienced a little.

Both of my cell phones got half a dozen or so telemarketing calls a day a couple of months ago but fewer now, sometimes none on some days. The phone services appear to be trying to minimize unwanted calls.

FWIW, both of my phones use MVNOs: one of my phones is on FreedomPop (AT&T), the other on Mint Mobile (T-Mobile).

I'm using Hiya call filtering on the Android phone with Mint Mobile. It helps a little. Nothing on the older iPhone with FreedomPop. Both phones get fewer unwanted calls now, so I'm betting the phone services themselves are doing more filtering now. There's little evidence that the telemarketers are voluntarily deciding to stop flooding us with calls. There's little or no enforceable penalty at the moment for spam calling.

If it is important the caller will leave voice mail, most spammers will not.

Depends on how old the number is, really. I've been on the same number for close to 10 years I think, have 300+ blocked numbers on my phone, and still get 4-5 unsolicited calls a day. A couple of voicemails too usually, of the "we're looking to buy properties in your area" variety. The do not call registry used to mean something. Not anymore.

OP probably got a recycled number.

It never is. I forward all my incoming phone calls to google voice. People can leave a message, which gets transcribed and emailed to me. People who need to get ahold of me know to email or iMessage me.

I white-list phone numbers on my home phone. Same deal. I use PhonePower internet phone. It emails me messages, and only approved numbers go through.

This has really improved my quality of life.

You'd be surprised. First of all, there are robocalls that don't care if you screen or go to voicemail. As long as your anonymous call rejection is turned off or not activated they'll go at it.

I had calls from the 956 area code and no full well that Social Security doesn't call from Laredo, Texas, they don't inform you that you have problems with your account like that and that computer sounds rather upset.

And don't call them back, chances are good you'll get redirected to a premium number that costs you at least $20. That's the entire deal, getting your money from your curiosity. Should be as plain as a nuclear meltdown.

I usually get several of those per day. Sometimes they will be within minutes of each other. The number shows as my area code and prefix and then four random digits. Very few legitimate callers have my number. Those who do don't have the same prefix as I do. I simply reject or ignore the calls.

Currently, I do not receive more than 1 call a month. I feel quite fortunate.

Up until about a year ago we had a land line that had the same number for the past 50+ years. It got to a point where we were receiving 5-10 unwanted calls a day. We finally decided to terminate the land line and go strictly mobile. In a way it was a bit sad because that original number had been with us for so long and felt like a piece of our identity.

This is sad. I remember as a kid...we were excited to hear the phone ring and can't wait to pick it up.

Well... a few internet savvy friends told me that when you hit 9 to be put on a do not call list or the unsubscribe in an email you are only validating you are a good number/email? Recently I have been taking the call, getting a live person, engaging them until they try to close a deal and then I ask if my recent bankruptcy , credit score of 100 or "what's a credit card?" rant usually results in them hanging up.and fewer calls. Maybe they have a dead lead file?

I found there were three things that seriously escalated the amount of these spam calls I was getting.

One, we messed up and got a car warranty some years ago. The dealership and that company farmed our number out and we get incessant harassment from these groups.
The second was my son, who lives in this household, getting credit cards. IDK how they make some connection but up until that time I was never bothered by the "we can lower your rate" nonsense. I don't even own a credit card.

I have gotten to where I do anything and everything I can to waste their time. Often I will answer, act interested and then ask if they can hold just to see how long they stay on the line. (I mute the call and listen)

The last and honestly foremost thing was adding my number to the do not call list. I got lit up after that. I cannot recommend it.

Yeah, it annoys me to no end that some businesses feel it is OK to sell your contact info... That just isn’t right, and frankly, I have gotten to the point where “no, I don’t need your services if you need my email, etc.”

The whole “loyalty shopper” thing is nothing more than a fishing expedition for your data... “no thank you... I don’t need your stupid card...”

Of course everyone that sells your info tells you that you can “opt out.” BS... you shouldn’t have to, and of course by the time you do, your info has been sold to every stupid list out there.
