Rear Brake Cable Housing Trick from Dave Moulton

Dave Moulton's latest blog is about avoiding paint damage caused by rear brake cable housing movement. A problem I'd never considered, but then I don't have any bikes with nice enough paint I suppose.

There's also a neat trick if you're running shifting brake levers by routing the cables around the far side of the head tube then crossing the cables under the downtube which stops the cable rubbing the paint off your headtube.

This of course requires under bottom bracket cable routing...or just run downtube shifters.

Dave went to a lot of trouble to ensure his rear cable looks too long.

I've been doing the "criss-cross cables" for years- I like that the cable bends are more gentle AND they look more even and symmetrical.

+1 on cross-cross shifter cables. No, it doesn’t add any noticeable friction or wear.

I can appreciate the Dave Moulton tricks for the rear brake housing, but have been successfully using one of those Jagwire rubber barrels on the Miyata housing where it crosses the fluted seat stay cap. Doesn’t hurt that Miyata paint seems to be incredibly tough.
