im in shock....

so here is the story, something broke on my bike and i was going to take it to a local bike shop to have it fixed or to get the tools so i could fix it. seems simple enough right, iv googled, dexed, citysearched and binged ALL FREAKING NIGHT and it all comes back the same. the nearest bike shop is 45 MILES AWAY IN ALL DIRECTIONS! i might have to get a car just to get to a freaking bike shop. that just ridicules in my opinion . i mean dam, does anyone else have this kind of problem???

What is broken? Maybe the home mechanics on the forum will help you find the problem and help you buy the right tools online.

I am over 20 miles from the nearest bike shop...and they don't work on IGH bikes

I do ALL my own mechanical work and own multiple bikes so if one is broken or waiting on parts I have another one to ride. All my bikes together (30+) still cost less than the average new car ($29,217) today.

Bike parts are relatively inexpensive compared to car parts and a bicycle is relatively easy to repair.

What broke on yours? Chances are it can be fixed with regular hand tools.

God bless youtube for step-by-step videos. I used to pay for simple things like getting a flat fixed or a tire on.

Ok...based on your highly technical terms Take a look at this tutorial from Park Tool they have a whole series on their website as well as being glad to sell you any tool you need. FWIW I buy mine from ebiketools great service and fast shipping.

Is this an urban area, small town or what?

Any large town or city worth the name has to have a bike shop and a book shop IMO.

Yeah, and every military base town has to have about a dozen pawn shops too, lol. Maybe pick up a junky used bike that happens to have a usable rear wheel, and ride on that wheel the next time you go to Savannah. If you search this forum you'll find a couple of ideas about how to transport a broken bike wheel, for example by tying it to the top strap of a backpack.

Wheel is also pretty easy to transport if you have a rear rack. Last week, I bungeed one to my rear rack ...same plane as the rear wheel, but up over the RD... and it worked out pretty good.

Depending on your exact location - you may find the following bike shop to be less than 1 mile away from you:
Wheelman Bike Shop Details

Wheelman Bike Shop in Hinesville, Georgia has a great selection of road and mountain bikes, helmets, lights, bike bags, bicycle parts, and bike repair services. Contact information for Wheelman Bike Shop bicycle shop is provided below.

Wheelman Bike Shop
201 W Oglethorpe
Hinesville, GA
31313
912-876-8595
Although learning to repair your own bike is usually a trivial matter.

EDIT: There is only one reference to this shop on the web at this web site. Also, Google Street View does not look promising, an empty lot.

If Wheelman Bike Shop actually [still] exists then they are doing a really good job of hiding. Another Google search shows the same bike shop at a different address; 352 MEMORIAL DR, the listing at this web page, does not include a phone number. Also, Google Street View of that address shows a possible shop - but the image is too poor to be certain.

Also, there is nothing in the pages I found that indicates which one was created first or indeed, when either was created (Google cache only gives the most recent date of being crawled). This makes it hard to know when the shop existed at either address.

If you are truly stuck - without access to a friend with a car, no public transport, etc. Then your last resort is hitch-hiking: get cleaned up, clean shave (if you are a post pubescent male or a really ugly chick), short hair, don't wear a cap, brush your teeth, eat a tic-tac, etc. Also a large sign that is readable from at least 100 m away is beneficial - simply have the one word HOME, the vagueness may pique the curiosity of a motorist causing them to change their usual selfish behaviour.

EDIT: IF you hitch-hike to a decent bike shop to buy a new bike, you could let them know you intend to ride it home

Just went by there. That's no bike shop, it's a daycare center. There's no bike shop on that street.

Cassettes do normally oscillate a bit as they rotate...is that what you are seeing? It may simply be that your gear shifter needs slight adjustment to stop the chain moving too far when you shift into the highest gear. Or is it something different than this?

Cassette shouldn't move enough to cause the chain the drop.

Op probably need a 2 mm spacer. But before he does that he needs a cassette cracker and a chain whip to get the cassette off.

For all that he needs a LBS or a good Internet connection.

Hopefully, 6 months later, he's figured this out.

My guess is that the gears needed to be adjusted, but the OP, being relatively inexperienced, noticed the usual cassette wobble, and thought that might be the cause.

Any good riding in the area? We had > 5 inches of snow last night. I'm guessing you have at least good weather going for you.
