I'm normally a good sleeper. About once a month or so I'll lay down after my normal routine and I could tell your right then that it's not gonna be a good night.
Got to thinking about it while riding this morning. Realistically I think the bad sleep was caused by indigestion. I ate wayyy too much food last night and had a very onion heavy dish which I have a family history of intolerance towards. Love the flavor but.
I'm typically on a 10-6 sleep schedule. (realistically it's more like 10.45 to 5.45). I use sleep as android with my phone on the bed to track my sleep. It does okay. The dynamic alarm works sometimes. Problem for me is I usually fall asleep before the 15 rest period expires so it misses some of my sleep and under reports.
I'll avoid the alcohol to sleep suggestion. I usually don't sleep well after any amount of drinking beyond a beer. And I havent had a night of heavy drinking since probably January in college. Even then I wasnt really a heavy drinker compared to some of my friends. I was good at moderation

Solution to the early morning wake up problem... Sleep in your car the night before a race. Maybe I just like to brag about the setup I've got in my Honda, but I've found leaving for a race and passing out at the start line preferable to getting up too early and having to figure out where I can stop to take my pre race **** and still make it to the race on time.

The pre-race **** is also often overlooked as an important part of training/racing. I was able to skip the porta-potty experience altogether at the recent RR since the hotel was 10 mins away from the race. Totally worth it!

I haven't slept through the night in years.
It's contributing to my slow slide to insanity and my weight issues as the only way I go back to sleep is to eat something. I literally wake up to consciousness anywhere from 1-5 times every single night.
to mitigate this I am in bed from 9pm - 7am. when my kids learn to get out of their cribs I will go back to crying at my desk at work, I think.

If it's not you should probably go see a specialist. Lack of sleep is bad for all aspects of health. Mental, physical et. al. CPAP machines suck, but I've seen people turn their lives around because of them.

I could maybe sleep in the back of my Golf, but I doubt it would be comfortable. And my bike rack does't have a locking mechanism.. Anyway a few weeks ago I just splurged and got a hotel the night before the race, I think I'll do that from now on.
The pre-race **** is also often overlooked as an important part of training/racing. I was able to skip the porta-potty experience altogether at the recent RR since the hotel was 10 mins away from the race. Totally worth it!

Luckily I quite enjoy sleeping in my Honda. I can almost lay fully extended in the back. Benefit of being below average height?
I've bought and used a sleep mask and ear plugs there which helps a lot. Started using mask inside as well, but not totally necessary since I'm asleep after sunset and awake before sunrise on most days.

@Ygduf, maybe if you used a sleep mask and slept in your Honda with a bottle of Jager you'd sleep better?

If you get a mask, make sure you get one that has some space over your eyes. The first one I had was flat and it wasn't comfortable and my vision was a little blurry when I got up in the morning.

I have earplugs, a mask, and I tape my mouth shut at night. Some nights I look like Hannibal Lecter. The first two I only use in if the wife is snoring or I sleep in, but I tape my mouth shut every night. Its probably the biggest thing that has mitigated my asthma.

I've oft been warned that a very sporadic single swallow of brandy is the road to alcoholism. Do you think giving teething babies a finger wet with it is setting them up for a lifetime of folly chasing the bottle too?
And then you redeem yourself for missing the sly humor in suggesting the other side of the coin from drugs.

Each apt is different construction, but I train at 0'dark:30 in the am. I have a neo and a 1st gen kickr in my 3rd floor apt. I put a cardboard base (wardrobe boxes from when I moved) down on the floor and put a rubber trainer mat over that. I haven't had any issues in 2 years of 4-5 days a week of training.

Man, I long for the days when I only woke up once. Now, I can count on waking up 3-5 times, mostly to pee. (Yes, I've seen a doctor. They have no solutions. And the prostate exam wasn't fun.)
I'll occasionally take an Advil PM. It helps, but it leaves me a bit groggy in the morning. My bigger issue is I don't really fall asleep until about 4 am, which means 2 hours of sleep.
At our last team mountains camp, the guy sharing a bedroom with me complained about how restless I was sleeping. I toss and turn all night long.
I also have to use a sleep mask, mostly because I sleep with my eyes slightly open, so any light automatically wakes me.
When I had a Fitbit tracking my sleeping, it often said I got about 3 hours of sleep most nights.

A benadryl will put me out, but 3am is leaving it a bit late. Still too much in your system by the time you need to be up, and I'm not a fan of the druggy feeling. I'd rather just be a bit sleep deprived.

I have no problem falling asleep. I usually wake up about 2 or so to pee, but often can't get back to sleep afterward. I'll toss and turn for an hour, then give up and make coffee. I usually start my ride about 5:30-6:00 and sometimes have time to sleep when I get back. (Retirement rocks!) When I don't have time to sleep, I rely on coffee during the day, which makes it harder to sleep at night, and the cycle repeats itself ad nauseum. I wish I could find a way to break the cycle.

I'll take melatonin from time to time if I'm not getting great sleep. Not the fastest acting stuff, but half a tablet could help in those middle of the night wake ups.

I am 63 years old.
Last time I had my annual physical my doc asked how many times I woke up in the night to pee.
I said a couple of times per year.

Is this a getting old kind of thing? I'm only 30 and I have no problems falling asleep. I'll wake up to pee maybe once every other night or so, but just like the first time I went to bed, it's pretty much lights out right away.

Yup. From what I've read, your body gets better as you age at eliminating fluid via urine, and this is exacerbated by the fact that ~30% of men have issues with enlarged prostates as they age. Getting old ain't for wimps.
