Are both days of Charm City on the same course?

That seems pretty odd, but maybe I missed something on bikereg.

If so, I'm probably only doing one day.

BitterKen, CrackMonkey, RacerMike - which day(s) are you doing?

I raced both days of Gloucester for a couple of years (before I stopped racing cross for awhile) and one year, the second day was just run the other direction and in another year, they just added a massive run up that cut the course a little short, but made the lap times the same. So my guess is that it's either going to be the same or just slightly different.

Duh. Both days!

I'm the fittest I've ever been and taking most of the road season off from racing has put me in a great mental shape as well. I'm really looking forward to coming out swinging this season. I do have a 1 1/2 week business trip in late Sept that's going to put a damper on things though...

I'm not sure which day(s) I'll be there. Hopefully both.

I'm trying to do it. I will be able to as long as my bike is finished!

Registered for both in the C/Cat 4 race. I'm feeling stronger this summer than last summer, so hopefully I can move up to the Master B race by October

I registered for both days, but am pretty certain I'll only be racing one.

Any thoughts on singlespeed gearing for this course?

Brian, it looks like the same course as last year which was pretty flat. Most, if not all the elevation gain was at the stairs.

^^^ Gear for a fast, flat race as there are long stretches where you can use your road fitness to your advantage. There's a couple of hills, but only may give you problems - it's short and a bit steep, so run it if your gearing is too high.

Looking forward to this one.

I don't know if I'll be using a cross bike or my mountain bike. Depends on if the cross bike comes in on time, but this one just looked like too fun a course to pass up!

The benefits of reading more closely, or maybe they updated to description.

"On Sunday we'll have the traditional Charm City Cross course (same as 2009) looping through historic DRUID HILL PARK. On Saturday we'll have the same start/finish but route the rest of the course differently.
-Combination of pavement, grass, dirt path, and sand."

and

"Course Map for Sunday (for Saturday the course will be generally reversed with the same start and finish)"

At least from the bike reg one I'm under the impression you'll just go around the course backwards on sunday. That would leave all the obstacles.

My guess is the course won't go down any stairs.

I haven't done a cross race with stairs yet. Are they not two sided stairs? One side you go up the other you go down? That's the only way I figure it would work, unless there's a big ramp down the other side.

Important question: Does a bike have to be UCI legal to race in the cat 4 and/or under 19 races at Charm City? I might be on my mtb which won't be because of flat bars..

Usually it's stairs up, ramp down. Plenty of cat 4s race on hyrbrids or MTBs. You'll be fine.

Usually the only rule is no forward facing bar ends.

The Sunday race will have the sand and the stairs. That is the traditional course. There are no stairs going down. These are stairs that have been built into the side of a grass hill to force a dismount. I'm sort of looking forward to a Saturday surprise. The course has gone through subtle changes since the race started but nothing major. Will be interesting to see what tweaks the Charm City folks throw at us.

I just posted a video with race commentary for what I believe will be the Sunday course. It is here: https://www.cxhairs.com/2010/09/09/ch...preview-video/

Nice - watching the cxhairs videos was definitely helpful to me last year and the commentary only makes them more so.

From a very reliable source, both days will feature the stairs run-up, so one won't be the exact reverse of the other.
