16 mile ride today with my daughter and her hubby. Today was my first outing in bike shorts and a jersey. 120 pounds has given me confidence to wear these again. Instead of padded cycling short liner... The ride was shortened due to bad weather or we might have added another 10. Daughter had a very difficult time with a 25 mph headwind... Still, 20 minutes after ending the ride, it began to hail and rain. So 16 is GREAT! Happy 4th of July!

Awesome!

I'm down about 120 lbs, myself, after reaching right about 370 last Summer.

As to your earlier posted issue, my bike... the one I have most of my miles on, and all my centuries, had gummed up brifters after sitting for well over a decade while I got married and fat.
They seemed to respond well to a flush/lube, but on today's ride my right one was still a little squirrely. As I'm planning to completely revamp the bike in the not too distant future, I went ahead and ordered some 2x9 Sora brifters
to get me through 'til then.

Keep those pedals turning!

Cool beans on the 2x9. I chose to keep the 3x7 on the Cannondale, and after cleaning the brifters, the bike will go back on the trainer and stay. It is the bike I crashed on, and my mind is not up to riding that bike outdoors anymore.

I am very glad I chose the compact 50/34 crankset, and paired it with 11-32 cassette. 2x10 on the Old Friend 1986 KHS Fiero. I'm finding I rarely use the the 34. I could probably settle for a 1x drivetrain.

14 months ago, at 378, I couldn't even ride on my trainer. Terrified I was going to fall over. I'm glad I chose surgery, as it is a tool to get me where I need to be. After the initial weight loss, the rest is on me. Period. I've already met and exceeded my surgeon's expectations. And now, I'm reconsidering my weight goals. This might push me under 200. A number I didn't feel comfortable at 25 years ago, the last time I was that weight...

Thanks Brother! You are an inspiration as well!

I kept trying to psych myself to get on a bike when I was at my top weight, but had a similar issue. I even bought heavy duty wheels and built up an 'expendable' bike, but still didn't get out and ride.

So... with some careful eating changes (no planned diets, just a change of habits) and a LOT of hiking.... I'm down to this point and starting to get some miles in. I'm aiming for about 200, myself.

First planned goal, other than my Healthywage.com 'wager', which I've done... but can't collect until Oct. (and have to keep it off, too), is the Tour de Taco in Clovis NM. That's in October, too.
If I'm feelin' REALLY froggy, the weekend before holds the Wheels of Fire century in nearby Tucumcari. Hmm...

Fear sucks ass. My fear of falling is well wrapped around my bicycle crash nearly 8 years ago. Broke my back and then some... So falling over really bugs me...

I do need to get to Wichita Falls for a Hotter-N-Hell ride... My sister sent me a jersey after my crash. Now I need to earn it...

Clovis and Tucumcari, haven't been through that area in years!!!

I was born and raised there, and still have family there.
One thing about riding in Clovis... I can do a 9-10 mile ride and only show less than 20 ft of elevation gain. Flat.
However, the wind sometimes more than makes up for it.

My brother had a crash a couple weeks ago, as I was getting him into road cycling. Fear and guilt worked together there, as I'd feel somewhat responsible if he'd been badly hurt.

Hotter'n'Hell was a blast. I did it in about 5 hours back in 2004. I don't guess I'll be too disappointed if I never get to that level of fitness again. I'll be happy just to be pedal mobile again.

I was stationed in Albuquerque in the early 80s... Rode my motorcycle through the Clovis area and south of there a lot... Flat would be great for me right now! And of course, the wind always seems to be blowing here too... But, I live in a hilly area, over 700feet elevation change just around town here. And of course, I live at the top of the hill... Ugh...

Hope that didn't scare your brother from riding. My younger brother has started riding lately. Though in Phoenix, he might not ride much till autumn...

I doubt I ever tackle a century again. Only went sub 5 once. Daughter has me talked into a 25 mile charity ride in a month. I'll be ready, but she might have a tough day...

He had to take his bike to a shop for a couple repairs, but nothing major. I'm a thousand miles away, but we keep track of each other on Strava, and I noticed he's been pedaling around on his Diamondback mtb while his road bike is in the shop, so I think he'll be fine.
I'll be back there in a few days, and will spend a little more road time with him. I don't like to sound like a know-it-all, but I usually only have a limited amount of time to get some info across. Sometimes I'll just point him toward some info online and let him find it.

Heading to Phoenix area first, delivering a cat for a friend, then I'll hit Clovis on the way back.
As Jake is having a brifter issue, and I'm taking the Cruze with no bike rack, I'll probably toss my Montague in the trunk for this trip.

That's quite kind of you! And yes, the shingles are getting better. Still see some of the remains of the rash, might scar like bad chicken pox. And I have some itching that is just nuts! But yesterday's ride was great!

Rough day... Dawg helping me with bike stuff. She would be more helpful if she had thumbs! The lightweight reward bike is closer to being finished than I am. And the old Cannondale R200 is ready to go back on the trainer... Woke at 7:30 this morning. Took off my CPAP mask. Played with the dog... And woke up at 11:10... Body trying to tell me something?

So, missed an early ride before it got hot. Missed a shooting trip to the desert with a friend... I'm beat like I've been busting my ass... So. Changed plans to work on the bikes. Maybe my truck engine, but it is hot today... Feels like I'm goofing off...

Oh, there is good news. Scale says another pound down. 257 now. 99 since surgery... And pulled my belt another notch. Pulled 42s on 6 weeks ago and they are starting to feel loose. Not sure I will but anything smaller until it gets cooler out, or 42s fall off me. Down from 54...

Day before yesterday I hit 254lbs and met my doctors blood pressure guidelines. Less than 140/80 for the first time in a while. Still whittling the fat off this body of mine. My goal is to do away with the blood pressure medicine with diet and weight loss. Been riding a lot of recumbent lately. They are fun bicycles and so very different from upright bicycles. Watched all my grandkids today for hours and had a good time. Speaking of clothing I'm going to wear my big pants and shorts until they look ridiculous on me before buying smaller clothes. I still have some of the smaller clothes from the last time I dieted several years ago. This time I'll try to wear them out.

Sometimes it's the little things that keep me from being more frustrated. I know I'm in much better health, and shape than a year ago. But had a BP of 93/58 @65 heart rate recently. Almost scared me seeing both BP and HR that low. I am anxious to see my bloodwork in Oct...

I'm altering my food strategy this week, see if I can drop a few pounds. I want in the 240s so I can ride that CAAD8!

As I am in my 5th week of Shingles (get the new vaccine if you are over 50, even if you had the old one!!!), I am left with just 3 places that itch like the dickens... But so MUCH better.

In the past few days I've come to realize a few things of interest to nobody but myself... I no longer have any specific idea what will be a healthy weight for me. I was the scrawny kid, wore 28s with a belt for a very long time. I have the pants from my early Navy years to prove this. I weighed 150-155 from the age of 13 till I got married at 20. Despite growing 6 inches... I worked out, could lift the same weight as the "big guys", bucked bales (rural Kansas), and wanted to be 190...

I retired from the Navy in 2001, at 240. I hit 300 by 2010, but held steady. Had my left knee replaced later that year, and got back on the bike again. August, I suffered that bicycle crash, breaking my back and more... I got to 256, before that was unsustainable at the time. (I do not reccommend injury as a weight loss method...)

I tried diet, after diet, after program after scheme. And my weight kept going up, 360 was a wake up call. 30 months ago I injured my left ankle after recovery from right Achilles tendon repair... I managed to lose 30 pounds before things went off the rails. I mention it elsewhere here.

A year ago May I was 378. Nothing worked. I was miserable. Couldn't exercise due to that sprained and failing left ankle, and my right knee was failing. I sought, and was approved for weight loss surgery. I did lose 22 pounds prior to surgery in Oct of 2018. But it was not the right way. Starving myself... I learned through a nutritionist the better ways, and that has carried over...

My surgeon said I would get to 280. After that, I was on my own. There are charts showing any number of percentages, and one showed I had a 10% chance of being at 190... This is a number I thought impossible. I'd be uncomfortable with. But now? I don't know...

I'm 257 yesterday. 99 pounds since surgery, 121 from my heaviest. I've passed my surgeon's expectation. And I am healthier, and my fitness is increasing. My blood wrk is vastly improved, my BP is low again, no meds. My heart rate is low again. I BREATHE easily. Healthier and more fit were my goals in the past, not so much weight. I'm there...

And the weight goals I set, I've all but acheived. 256 is just a pound off. But that is my lowest in 8 years, and 100 pounds down since surgery. My next is 240, and I was going to reward myself with a lightweight bike. Well, the lightest I've ever owned. Why not get on that bike, and dream bigger? Oops, smaller...

200 as a goal? Hmmmm...

The vaccine is effective even after shingles is active? I would have thought that a vaccine is only for prevention.

What's the name of it, so I can look into it?

Shingrix. Been out for about 2 years. My do says the older vaccine is only 50-70% effective, the new one is better than 90% and better still for those over 80 years of age... She has me scheduled for the vaccine in about 2 months.

Cool. It says not for people 'currently' with shingles. Does 'currently' mean 'active right now' or 'in the past but not active at the moment'? My wife had shingles like 10-15 years ago, and occasional flareups every year or two since, so I'm not sure it ever goes away

EDIT now I see "you should get Shingrix even if in the past you had shingles"

OK, my friends. I am FINALLY clear of the last itchy of the Shingles. But, like Chicken Pox, I think I'm going to be scarred for at least awhile...

Alright. Last week I was again, 257. But that broke this morning, weighed in at 255. WOOOOOOOOO!
Heaviest 378
Surgery 356 on 10/22/18
Current weight 255. Officially, 101 pounds lost since surgery, 123 total!!!

So, yesterday was a big day for me. I missed a fast group, thankfully. They did 40 miles at just under 17 MPH. No way could I do that... I started off on my own, and got a message from someone that ride short notice. So that 2 mile warm up eas a good start...

My new riding friend and I are both veterans, having knee issues and ride a very similar pace, a good 13.4 mph. Not blistering but great for my thinning self!

Rather than edit my previous post...

I got out the 2006 CAAD8 I've been fussing with the FD adjustments on... This bike is my reward for getting to 240. Or, was the original plan...

It weighs a bit more than planned, but all it needs now is bar tape... And is still 7 pounds lighter than my KHS I lifted over my head a few weeks ago. Of course, at the risk of sounding like a weight weenie!

I took it for a quick 2 mile shakedown and need to make a couple adjustments. But man is this thing QUICK! I was amazed at the vibrations that hit me through the frame, yet weren't transmitted through the carbon fiber fork... I'm comfortable with the bar position, so far. So now I need to wrap the bars... I'm not happy with the KMC 10spd chain, even though I use it on my KHS. Just seems noisy. A SRAM 1031 chain arrived to swap in. I hope that works better with the entire SRAM drivetrain. Force Shifters, Red 53/39 crankset, SRAM 11 (or 12?) to 30 cassette, and Rival RD and FD...

The inexpensive wheelset may not stay. The rear has a seam that makes noise as the brake is applied. Doesn't catcher lock up. But doubt I could smooth it any...

So. I might be adjusting my schedule for reward. Originally I said 240. Now I'm thinking, 240s. I've said here and elsewhere, I was very uncomfortable below 200 pounds in the past. But that was 30 years ago. Maybe it is time to consider what "if". 225 was where I felt I was in my best shape. But do I need to be in THAT sort of shape again?

All the above is moot. Seeing my podiatrist Friday to be fit for an orthotic. My foot/ankle pain has improved as much as OT and exercise can get it. I feel the ankle roll to the inside with every step. So I need to treat. OTC insoles helped, but not enough...

And finally. Tonight at least... The PT clinic with the hospital group I use, offers a bike fit clinic. Pay my PT copays, and bring my bike in... Ah... which bike?

253lbs this week and heading down. I noticed you are using a seat that looks to be maybe more prostate friendly. I recently switched to noseless seats. I have a Hobson seat and a Spongy Wonder seat. This is due to a prostatitis episode that cured from every worrying about people pointing at my bicycle seats and laughing. My noseless seats are quite comfortable but very different to ride. They don't touch anything except the sit bones. It has taken me a couple of months to get them adjusted and useful. Both seats came with the instruction to give them time to get used to them and set up. I'm very happy I tried these seats and will continue to use them. One of my bicycles is a revamped Schwinn Varsity from the era when steel is good and more steel is better. I would guess 35lbs without bags and water bottles. I lift it over a fence on a levee fairly often and count that lift as strength training. I have a much lighter Schwinn Sports Tourer and a fairly heavy Ryan Vanguard recumbent. They all do between 10 and 12 mph average on the roads I ride so weight has had very little effect on my overall speed. I live in a very flat land, a river delta area, so a heavier bicycle is not the negative like it would be riding long steep grades. A few years ago I got down to 220lbs and felt fine but hungry all the time. I'm trying this time to find an eating schedule and food that does not leave me hungry and yet keeps the weight off. In other words I'm trying harder this time. I wish you the best with your ankle problem. Walking is the single most important exercise activity that humans are made to do and not walking is unhealthy for you. I suffered planar fasciitis last year and couldn't hike or walk any distance without severe pain. Making up for it this year though and very careful not to trigger another episode. I wish you the best of luck concerning your ankle problem.

The Cobb seat was a gift from a friend, the seat has some interesting history, well, to me, probably not to others. As to prostate friendly, I cannot speak to that. I know what little I've sat on it, I like it a lot, and it might be something I seek new for other bikes. Living at the top of a hill, buike weight is indeed a big dealt to me. Jumping off the 31 pound 29er for my 25 pound road bike, is a big difference, so the 18 pound CAAD8 is quite refreshing climbing with. I barely needed my smaller chainring the first outing. I do wish my RD covered the 12-32 cassette, or better the 12-36 I have. but the 11-30 will suffice for now.

I'm limited on foods. As a part of my normal diet I avoid the majority of carbs. Not truly Keto, but close enough it seems. I avoid sugars and a lot of overprocessed foods..

My summer of misery contines, I just finished a weeklong bout with Diverticulitis. Not fun and really knocked me in the dirt. But looking forward to a ride this weekend with my daughte and her hubby again. And a couple evening rides with a friend perhaps this week. Depends how much energy I regain!

I don't keep bread at home and very little pasta. I do eat baked potatoes, usually one medium potato per day. I follow an Atkins like diet. Meat and vegetables with little or no carbs. This diet is good for your heart also since it drives down your cholesterol. I have never drunk sodas and believe that is one of the reasons I'm not full blown diabetic now. You are right about the gearing. The heavier the bike the lower the gears go so it can be pedaled up hill. I run a 26/34 on my recumbent which feels like 100 revolutions of the pedal per yard gained on the ground. Heavier bikes are slower on hills. Of course when going downhill the heavier bikes do go fast, ha ha. I've lost another couple of pounds this week. Did an arduous hike in the high Sierra mountains and that knocked some weight off of me. The hike was followed by two days of walking for hours in the sun both days. I've also been eating much less this last week and that helped. Using Myfitnesspal I've left calories on the books every day so far. Diverticulitis is not fun. I've not had that yet but have had friends that suffered. I go to the dermatologist tomorrow for more skin cancer stuff. I've had to deal with skin cancers for a decade now. So far I'm still on top of the ground. Have fun on your rides.

I wasn't sure I was going to weigh today, or even this week. After hitting 255 two weeks ago, I battled some Diverticulitits. I lost 5.5 pounds, but that was mostly water. So I ended last week down just .4 pounds. This past week I felt HEAVY. Very HEAVY. I considered not weighing. But my wife threatened not to feed me... SO I weighed, and was SHOCKED!!!!

I was 248.6. How in the world did I lose 6 pounds this past week??? So after I nearly hyperventilated. I stepped on and off the scale 5 times to see if it was really 248.6. Stayed the same every time. OK. I've lost 130 pounds from my heaviest. 108 since surgery last October...

I rode my CAAD8 a mile a couple times this week. I ran out of time this weekend to change the chain out. I need to. I did decide on bar tape, some simple Cinelli black cork. I like it. For no.

Friday I did another 1.7 miles on the CAAD8. Yesterday I rode my KHS 12.92 miles around town. Today I rode with my daughter and her hubby again, 13.25 miles. All told, I'm at 30 miles on the bikes this week. Best single week outside riding in YEARS!!!

This coming week at work is going to be a challenge to ride at all. Have to be in at 4 every morning, instead of 7. Still home at normal time. But I'm not likel to have time to ride. I MIGHT be able to get a rde or two in on my Trek MTB at work though. We'll see.

Wow. I'm under 250!!! This means my goal of 240 is almost reached. Time to recalculate goals...

How wonderful to lose some more weight. I'm right behind you at 251lbs now. Ride and walk as much as possible. Work tends to get in the way of a lot of things. Sometimes work issues can effect your life in a negative way without realizing it yourself. Keep up the good work.

Yes sir, work in the way... Last week was 13 hour days, coupled with my 2 hour round trip commute made for long days... Congrats on the weight!
