Octalink V1 BB to External BB?
Hi,
Is it possible to install a crankset that uses an external threaded BB (Shimano Hollowtech, SRAM GXP, Campagnolo Ultra-Torque), in my Trek 5200 that uses Ultegra 6500 and internal V1 octalink? ..and is it advantageous to do so? I would like to eventually upgrade my bike to a lighter crankset, but the Octalink has got me pretty limited.
Thanks

Probably. It opens up a whole new selection of crank sets to you if you do. You only need to make certain that that crank also has a bb that will fit your shell.

If 68mm Engish threaded, which I assume since it is Octolink V1 (I had one for years), then no problemo. You need a new crankset and BB. Both my bikes are converted to external, one a FSA, the other an Origin 8. Go for it...one is EXO and one is EVO, difference is spindle diameter. Get the BB that matches the new crank...do you have the tools to remove old one and replace the new one? Needed for sure...
