I don't understand patching tubes as a matter of practice.
I understand it when I'm on the side of the road and don't feel like walking home. But I don't understand patching tubes until the tube is more patch than original.
Tubes are cheap. I can always find a use for an old one. I just don't get riding on tubes with 15 patches on them.
Maybe it's because I blow a tube about once a year across both my bikes and my kids' bikes and its just cheap to replace one. Maybe if I lived in a place with goat heads and cactus needles and nails everywhere and had a punctured tube every other week like some people it would get expensive to be constantly replacing tubes.
Does anyone here patch them until you can no longer see any of the original rubber?

It also makes sense that the tube just had a weak spot.
It was old. This is an actual thing that happens to rubber. I swear I'm not making this up. Rubber gets old and brittle. I could even feel the rubber near the seem rip was tougher and less pliable.

One just hissed when it was aired up with my compressor. Turned out the rubber near the valve separated.
Another one went bang as you described when I was filling it with my hand pump. Never got above 50 psi when that sucker let loose. Can't recall the location of the failure.

For the once a year I deal with them (maybe) it's just easier to get a new tube.
If I had multiple flats a year...yeah I can see not wanting to buy a new tube all the time.

Everyone sneers at the ancient "pinch test" for tire inflation but it has its advantages. (That and use a pump that isn't too easy. Most cyclists can benefit from the additional upper body work anyway.)
That said, I can over-inflate my tires with nearly all my pumps. Zephal HPs and HPXs can go very high if you are willing to so the work. My Specialized floor pump will get to 120 with no difficulty and the gauge can be rotated. Mine has lost its calibration,. I don't know if my 100psi is 100 but I set it to pass the pinch test so I don't worry.
Good practice - always do the pinch test after you pull the pump off. It's easy and the more often you do it, the more accurate your "gauge" gets. (Other pluses - that gauge isn't pump dependent and much harder to lose, even if you forgot to zip up your tool bag.

I patch tubes because it is simple to do and I don't discard a perfectly usable tube.

Are these fancy tubes? Is there a tube tax in your state that I don't know about?
Most websites have regular tube discounts on good brands, so whenever I order something I'll usually thrown in a few Vittoria, Continental or Michelin tubes for $4 or so...

Tubes are not nearly as cheap as patches. Everybody has a different utility function for money vs time, I am at the extreme cheapskate end of the spectrum. I will patch a tube indefinitely many times, as long as it's an 'easy' patch job. If I apply a patch and it fails (see above carp about holes right on seams/ridges), or if a leak develops at the stem, or a new puncture is so close to a previous patch that a new patch would have to overlap, then I throw it out.
Many of my tossed tubes have half a dozen patches. $6 X (6) - $0.25 X6 = $34.50 I didn't have to spend. And if they saved me one incident of a tiny wire causing more flats than I had tubes (or CO2 cartridges - I presume those without time don't use pumps on the road) possibly a whole lot more $$s (or a spouse's resentment).

When I was much younger I worked for a tire company in the ghetto in Chicago. A kid brought his bike in one day to have one of the guys put air in his tire and it blew up in the shop. I'd never heard it that quiet in there before after that, and eventually everyone realized it wasn't a shot. They bought him a new tube and put in it for him too, everyone laughed when it was over.
