The answer to the "Does this make me look fat?" question is another question: "Do I look suicidal?"

Personal experience: Sometimes, a long pause is the worst possible answer, regardless of what you say or don't say after the pause.

The best answer to the question "does this make me look fat" is always no. It is honest and inoffensive. I mean, if you look fat it isn't the fault of the clothes...

Correct. And another question is why wasn't the student paying attention?

I also don't think any question is stupid. i certainly have asked my share of questions here on BF. The most recent was how can someone possible be able to objectively tell one tire is faster than another with a power meter? I didn't think that was possible with all the possible variables. I immediately got two answers that politely gave me the answer.

Take it from a planetary scientist (me), that is very far from a stupid question. It is a deep question.

Not all planets have atmospheres and among those that do, ours (80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, or "air"), is extremely unusual and arose from a complex series of processes.

Ya I’m going to guess plants evolving on earth had a lot to do with it.

As a happily married 50+ man I will take on the easer question
"Does this make me look fat?"
The answer is (your hair looks nice have you lost weight?)
This will work for lots of questions.

Someone being self conscious about their appearance is pretty common and if they are fishing for reassurance that they look ok to ride in that outfit give it to them, if weight is their issue riding more will likely help.

The OPs question “what is a seat stay?” easy to Google the answer but that’s not very social why not ask a forum and start a conversation with humans? or is that a stupid question?

Obviously that's a good guess. But for the first 2 billion years after photosynthesis began, the O2 content of the atmosphere pretty much stayed at <1%. Then suddenly about 600 million years ago, it jumped up to ~20%. And all of this was before the advent of land plants, which didn't happen until about 500 million years ago. Of course, it was also before the advent of cyclists, who are all grateful that they don't have to pedal up hills breathing in air with only 1% O2. Some of those cyclists may fantasize about the stats they could put up if there were, say, 30% O2 in air.

And the nitrogen part is also interesting - The dominant gas in the atmosphere of Venus and Mars is CO2, not N2.

I'm sure few (none?) of you care about any of this, but definitely some of the most obvious (seemingly stupid) questions are very deep.

Or as Pete Townshend wrote, "The simple things you see are all complicated."

Maybe some ocean plant became very successful and took off in a hurry 600 million years ago and our nitrogen was part of the protoplanetary disk made up of Carl Sagan’s Starstuff, held in place by our gravity(why does mass attract other mass? now there is a question) and Earth’s Magnetic Field. Before I posted that quick answer I Googled it so as to not sound too stupid(hate that word) and I see Earth’s nitrogen is different than what we have found out there. Hmmm so I’m not going to fill my bike tires with Earth’s strange nitrogen at least not until you planetary scientist can tell me Why is there air.

For any none planetary scientists who want to know more I found this site but I will need to look up some of the big words.
