Extensions to the American River Bike Trail

Hi,

I'm in Sacramento area now and then for business. This time I'll be visiting a client in Gold River. I understand I could go west on the ARBT back to Sacramento's discovery park but I've done that before.

If I go East, I can do a loop around a lake (12 miles) but is there any continuation of the ARBT after the lake or is that the end of the ARBT?

The parkway goes all the way up to Beal's Point (mile 31 on the map: https://arpf.org/pdf_files/ARPmap.pdf). Have you been up that far? It sounds like you're talking about just looping around Lake Natoma. After that, you have to move onto surface streets if you want to keep going (as far as I know).

That's correct. The paved path ends at Beals. You could get on Auburn-Folsom Rd. and ride up to Auburn or, if you have MTB or CX, you could explore the dirt trails to Granite Bay.

Folsom and EDH both have pretty nice bike lanes and a network of bike paths, so you don't have to restrict yourself to the ARBT. I usually head that way when I need hill work.

I took A-F Rd up to Indian Hill Rd yesterday, then back home to Carmichael through Newcastle, etc. My legs hurt.

That's a good ride. For the past couple of years my "birthday ride" route has been up A-F road to the Auburn airport and back. Last year (I think) I detoured through Penryn/Newcastle before heading home to Fair Oaks.

First time I had gone that far up A-F, but definitely fun. I had some unexpected added climbing. I descended through Newcastle to Taylor Rd which ended up being closed for a homicide investigation so I had to climb back up over 80 and find a different way home.

You guys are talking about one of my favorite commute routes. I live right off Auburn-Folsom at Indian Hill. Some mornings I ride from the house down A-F to Old Town Folsom where I drop the bike in a bike locker and continue on Lightrail to work. Easy and fast ride in the morning, but I get my hill climbing on the afternoon reverse trip.

If I'm feeling adventurous and need some dirt action I'll grab the hardtail 29er in the morning and detour off A-F at Walden Woods (Ardea) to get into Granite Beach for some off road action on the way. Of course I pay the price for that fun in the afternoons when I have to ride that 29er up that last grade on a-f to Indian Hill.
