Back to biking (temporarily)
So, the car is broken once again. Looks like I'm cycling 10 miles to work tomorrow on the old 3-speed. Google reckons it should take me about an hour or so. Will be interesting to see how out of practice I am...

Car broken, that sucks. No worries mate, I commute ten miles every day one way. Have been for years. I own a working car and a PU and a motorcycle. I just would rather ride my bike. I hope you get feeling better about riding. It's a great way to go.

Well, I survived the journey. Journey time was about 45 minutes (or at least it would have been on the way there if I hadn't taken a wrong turn). The route is nice and hilly which held me up a bit, but generally OK. I might consider riding one or two days a week, but wouldn't fancy doing it every day. Not having to search for a parking space is a bonus though. Could be an excuse for N+1

10 mph is not bad at all for a 3 speed bike. Don't get discouraged if some think your slow or out shape. You can do it and chances are you just may continue doing so after you get your car fixed. I have been commuting for years 11 miles one way and my average speed is about 14 mph in the summer and 12 mph in the winter on a hardtail mountain bike and very hilly terrain. So best of luck and enjoy.

I don't deny I'm out of practice- I used to ride every day to and from university in hilly Guildford which kept me in shape. When I did the London to Brighton night ride last year I managed to keep up with the roadies on my 3-speed, so I'm fairly sure my lack of speed is down to the engine needing a tune-up rather than the bike itself
