Big off road tires with carbon aero wheels... made me scratch my head. The 1'' of cable routing through the stem doesn't do much for me either. Seems kinda silly and really doesn't clean up the cockpit any.

It's an internal cable stop for the cantilever brake cable. Without it you'd need an external one hanging under the bars or mounted to the front of the fork crown.

Deep section wheels are a popular choice for CX racers on muddy or sandy courses. It's significantly harder to pedal if your rim is submerged in mud or sand so often riders will choose a deep rim, again depending on the race course.

I agree they look out of place on that bike. Also it doesn't take a lot of sand to go over the top of a box section rim

i have one of those internally routed enve/vanilla stems too. i didnt think they were still doing it. i kind of like how that one routes through the side rather than in the middle of the faceplate like mine. it feels like the bend in the housing would be less severe that way.
