I finally landed a vintage ST in my size for a good price. Here is my 1987 Cannondale ST400. Needs a new bottom bracket and most likely new front hub bearings, but that is pretty minor stuff.

Needs mostly a pair of drop bars.

Very cool. I spotted a purple one one up on the local craigslist, (my size, $100, beautiful condition!) I need another touring bike like I need a bleeding headwound, so thank goodness it was claimed before I saw it.

Caveman, your bike looks like it came off the Gitane production line - the geometry and lugs are nearly a match to mine. If you need more rack details, let me know and I'll provide photos or measurements.

Updated Miyata 1000

After my summer trip, I figured my bike could use some upgrades:
- New Brooks honey bar tape

- Tektro Rl340 with gum hoods

- Zefal HP pump

- Panaracer Pasela PT tires 700 x 35c

- Planet Bike Cascadia plastic fenders

- new brake and shifting cables (They haven't been fully set up yet, but it will be done later next week)

I think the bike looks sweet. I can't wait to take it on my next trip through the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff next summer.

I think that I am going to ride it through the winter and then in the spring update the bike, since I like it so much.

I have been looking around and the triple Campy stuff is not very easy to find, I was thinking maybe it might be easier to go to a 105 or Ultegra triple group, probably the newer 10 speed with the shifter cables coming out the back of the hoods. I know the 9-spee stuff is very cheap nowadays but I really think it would be easier to use a bag up front without the shifter cables coming out the sides of the hoods.

Love the stiff Cannondales for touring. I'd go with barend extensions and thumbies, or drop bars and barend shifters but it's new and you should make it your style.

I am in the market for a Deer Head RD if you decide to change it out. I have a Sequioa that needs one. Let me know if you would like to part with it.

Might want to get non-super plate version.
After some earlier discussion and research on these RD, they can be quite problematic.

Here are bikes I no longer own ....

86 Bianchi Portofino .... I really loved this bike but it was a skosh too large , still it was very nice

78 Motobecane Grand Jubile again too large for me to ride comfortably , but still I loved everything about it but the size.

94 Trek 520 , this one fit me perfectly and I should have kept it ... Next one of these I get is staying in the stable and not leaving.

Nice pair! They both look to be in beautiful shape.
But I swear, I am seeing these `78s everywhere, now that I've bought my own.

Of course, I can't leave well enough alone. I've just ordered a 650b wheelset, fenders, long-reach brakes, porteur-style handlebar, and reverse brake levers for mine. That initial $60 investment is snowballing already, and this bike is still weeks away from being built. But I've had so much Motobecane GT inspiration lately that I think I'm going to have to reshuffle the order again. This one will be next in the workstand after the Dawes Ranger is finished.

This has been an incredible winter for bike projects so far. After the Ranger and the GT, I've got a Raleigh Portage and a Trek Elance to build up. The GT and Portage will show up on this thread for sure. Not sure yet what I'm going to do with the Elance. One of these days I'm going to have to sell a couple just to make room!

Thanks! The '78s came with the top tube cable guides, and the nice covers on the handle bars. They also had the super strong Weinmann concave rims. Good luck with your changes! Sounds good!
