You must be buying new bikes. Look for good vintage ones = lower cost, available, 90+% of performance, most can handle new drivetrains to get to 95+% of performance.

I've noticed that Trek in particular, but also Specialized and some others, now put their brand name on the bike but not the model name. I wonder why they do that. It doesn't bother me at all, but I've noticed it.

Maybe they figure putting the model name on there just makes it too easy to figure out what a bike is worth. Since they sell more cheap ones than expensive ones, maybe us cheapskates don't want to advertise the "low end" aspect, while the high-end owners might not want to make it too easy for the unsophisticated thieves with google to figure it out.

I think they should festoon the frame with text like a bottle of Dr. Bronner's soap. Give me something to read while I'm fixing a roadside flat.

When was it NOT like this

There have always been some loud and some understated. Race-oriented road bikes tend to be the worst, but judging from what I see so many roadies wearing, they seem to like it.

In the 80s, a buy a fridge and get a Free Bike a "Firenze" and my Japan Made Specialized Expedition touring bike ,

both were the same Grey Metallic color & both used Clear adhesive stickers on them..

Fridge buyers brought many of the bikes in to the bike shop to get them safety check tuneups ..

and so eventually my touring bike had the graphics from the free bikes ,

Though I never made it to the Italian city of Florence, ... they would not get the joke anyhow....

I definitely notice when I walk into a shop and am immediately turned off. I much prefer vintage bikes - but mostly for the lines. It is a plus they are less logo heavy. My recently stolen bike only had a head badge after my powder coat. The new one will have a decal and perhaps a head badge.

IMO 90s fade paint jobs, like those on Treks, were the best.

Anything is better than plain flat black.

I like bikes that come light on graphics and lettering so I can add my own. Easily changed or removed.

Less, is often more. I must admit, however, that I really like some of the details on my Colnago Master, including that little racer painted on the top tube.

On the other hand, what some might call "obnoxious" is actually just contrasting "vibrating"colors against each other, which aids in visibility and safety.
"Clashing" colors works for advertisers, might as well use it to lure the eyes of motorists up from their goddam phones?

Went through the all black phase in the late 90's and now I like more color on the frame. Paint my own bikes and the only advertising on them is the headbadge. Color schemes are all one color or a simple two tone with the head tube painted a contrasting color to the other tubes on the bike. Keeping it simple, but with some interesting color choices.

I really like the suggestion of mimicking Dr. Bronner soap bottles. Great, great idea!

What vintage? I ask because by 2001 they had changed the design of the little man to one raising his right hand for the win.

I am not really sure. I bought my Master in 2016, maybe they went back to both hands on the handlebars for safety reasons.
