Road culture: Is the kudos like the wave?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't understand the whole "kudos" thing on Strava. Is it a proxy for esteem, or do people gain something from the site activity?

I think it’s an online equivalent of primate grooming behavior and it clearly generates traffic.

It's the times/culture we live in today. People have to post everything about their lives to social media then pump each other up with likes and kudos.

"I need to post a pic of this duece I just dropped! My followers are going to want to see that. Wow, I already have a hundred likes and kudos. That was a good one."

Strava is a social platform, so interacting with others and saying 'good job' is part of that social aspect.
But it's also easy to ignore.

I make sure to always give a kudo to those who unseat me from a KOM. It just seems like a gentlemanly thing to do.

I kudos all. Completionist OCD behavior. I find it annoying that my own rides don't get an orange hand.

I've found the number of kudos I get depends primarily on day and time of posting. Exact same ride posted before noon on weekend will get far more kudos than one posted on weekday evening. Just a matter of how many are active on Strava around the time.

Also found that if I give a bunch of kudos before starting a ride vs. right after finishing I get far fewer kudos for that ride I just did. I think that is because when kudos is given people open up Strava to see it and will give kudos to what ever is in feed.

As I said above I'll give a kudo to just about anything. I'm not following tons of people so it's not hard for me to click a button. What I do limit is comments on Strava to extraordinary (for that person) rides.

There aren't too many places around here to ride so I see people doing the same segments over and over again. You get a good idea when someone has done something different. Maybe it's their first ride on a new bike. Maybe they rode a really long distance. Something like riding 100 miles or doing the Leadville 100 or bonking on the Six Gap ride here in Georgia or setting a new personal record of some kind (and not just some Strava segment record).

My best friend from highschool runs 3 miles a day most days and all I give him is a kudos - and I've known him for 30 years! I've only ever commented when he ran a half marathon and a marathon. But a thumbs up? Sure.

Yup. Also known as the Ozzie Suckup. It pretends to be your friend, then steals your KOMs.

It's no different than a "Like" button on any other social media site.

I understand social media and I know that people get a dopamine charge out of it, but "likes" and kudos and thumbs ups aren't really social interactions. It's almost anonymous when there are dozens or more, and it's not usually really approval for the ride or run. So I don't see what people objectively value from it.

I think you're wrong here. Do you not say "nice ride" at the end of a group ride? It's just an acknowledgement of them from you. Why not say it in the virtual world to someone with a kudo?

They are manifestly rewarding enough to reinforce the kudos-seeking behavior.

I took all of my commutes private, this morning. No cold shoulder intended to my local friends, but the the kudos's from rank strangers gave me the creeps and I don't want random people knowing where I work.

Neither do I, but it's clear some people get something out of it.

I do wave at other riders though. If they don't wave at me I come here and complain about it.
