How much are previous season bikes usually discounted?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How much are previous season bikes usually discounted?

My LBS has a 10% discount right now through the entire store. I want a 2016 model so I wasn't expecting to make a purchase till the end of the year after the 2017 Specialized models come out around September. If I remember correctly they still didn't discount till a few months later, almost all 2015's are gone now so it's hard for me to compare.

If it would only be around another 5% I think having an extra season of riding may be worth it. I ride a 56 and I'm guessing 54-58cm so I'm not even sure if those are usually leftover. Fwiw the bike in question is a Diverge Expert so another -10% becomes a fairly substantial price movement.

I've seen 35-40% off for previous model years. I think 10-15% off is pretty standard for current models. I recently bought 2 2016 bikes for 28% off and 15% off.

Keep in mind they can only discount last year's models that are left over. 54 and 56 are definitely the most popular sizes and sometimes hard to find last year's in those sizes

Some manufacturers also have price restrictions. We can't discount (at all) certain bikes until they're the previous year. A few of those manufacturers even go so far as to set previous year discount prices. Up to 15% off when 1-year old, up to 25% when 2-years old and it's only when they're 3-years back that we can let them go for whatever. Ironically, those same prices have such terrible margins that at anything more than about 25% off and it's a loss.

The real savings is on last season's components, especially when a new series has been introduced.

This is how you can build a better bike for lots less $$$...
