Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Perfect sunny day today 28c Did a different ride too up to the town of Birdwood and the Motor Museum. I had the computer on for basic stats
Time: 2.56
Distance: 73km
Average: 24.7kph
Max speed:64kph

I'm happy with that considering there's still a lot of climbing. I did feel strong at the start but on the last 5k the road is very bad only on the return side with a strong head wind up the gorge that knocked the last of the energy out of me.
I'm not at all ashamed to have been passed by Peter Sagan and the rest of the team on Gorge Rd. They all had a good look at my bike too, I mean who wouldn't haha Lots of team cars out checking the tdu course

The Motor Museum

Kind of a rough weekend. Saturday I had to drop my car off for repair, but I took my bike so I could go riding. Nice temps, but really windy. I went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for about 40 miles. I had a squirrel run under my bike between the wheels, but he popped out again without causing any harm. Sunday my legs were beat. Also felt very tired. Managed 32 miles around S. Tampa.

First time in months I was able to handle back-to-back-to-back-to-bike rides.
  • 18 miles Friday, a leisurely cruise to check out the holiday lights before the traditional post-Twelfth Night vanishing of the lights.
  • 30 not-too-hard miles Saturday on the road bike to test a different saddle setup. Felt good.
  • 30 hard miles Sunday on the road bike to try for some wind assisted PRs. The 20 mph tailwind was fun. The 20 mph headwind on climbs, not so much fun. Did snag a few new PRs, and a best-of-2019 on one segment, which is meaningless -- it's only the first week of January and my time was two minutes slower than the KOM.

And now my legs are cooked. Taking a few days off.

Proud to say I got out for 22 miles on 1/5. But I also live in the Midwest, and January road riding (or any riding) isn't something I usually take part in. Good way to start the year!

Did Tour de Zwift 1-4 this week.

Sat: I am damn close to getting the Tron bike so I decided to do Alpe du Zwift twice today to get even closer. 37mi 7000'. Luckily when you head downhill you can let it coast for like 15 mins so i refilled my bottle and had a snack. 2100' left to go AHH so close. ticked over level 24 today too. Longest trainer ride in quite a while but felt good. legs are toast now though. maybe easy on the mountain bike tomorrow if it gets near freezing.

Just one 16 mile ride this weekend, but it was a doozy. I tackled a favorite nearby roller coaster workout route where the climbs were into 20 mph headwind with gusts up to 30 mph. Grueling but actually more enjoyable than doing intervals at home on the trainer. A bit chilly but I was dressed almost too warmly -- even my insulted gloves were soaked with sweat.

Too bad Strava doesn't factor in wind resistance. I don't use a power meter either. Strava estimated it as a puny 103 watt, 486 calorie effort, but it felt as difficult as my usual 30 mile faster rides in less windy conditions. There is an app/site that uses Strava data and factors in wind resistance, but right now it's miscalculating wind direction so the relative effort scores aren't accurate. It could be a useful app if Strava incorporated it. I'll readily admit all of my top tens on Strava are heavily tailwind assisted. In a weighted score I wouldn't have a top ten anywhere. I'm strictly a tailwind mooch, taking advantage of those days just for the amusement of seeing my name alongside the strongest local riders.

Mostly indoor trainer sessions otherwise. Lots of cold rain this past week and I'm battling a chronic sinus inflammation problem -- not infection but painful inflammation and congestion from the mountain cedar and dry air.
