Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday (aka Machka's Australian Birthday) -- Rowan and I hosted a 300 km randonnee in northern Tasmania.

It was a perfect day. Not too much sun. No wind. Moderately warm temps.

We had 2 riders ... we never get very many out ... and they told us they enjoyed the ride.

We spent much of our day in a little town full of topiary waiting for them and then providing them with food, water, etc.

While there we did a lot of walking, standing and stretching. I figured it was a good opportunity to do my stretching exercises for my injured hip and back.

There was a bit of mad driving about when TasRail decided to close one of the road we wanted to use!! When we drove up, the road was open. When we drove back, it was closed!! We had one rider up ahead and we didn't know where he was ... and one rider behind approaching the closed road.

In the end, both went through and it was OK. Maybe 100 metres where some works were going on. We're not sure why they decided to close the entire road for that. And evidently, there is another cycling event going on today that wants to use that road too ... they're not too happy either!

Oh well, a bit of excitement and fortunately everyone was all right.

Now today it's windy and looks like it is going to rain.

On the trainer still. There is still a lot of ice, and we are getting yet another winter storm...so the roads are going to be fairly awful for at least another week.

Friday: Intervals. Fun!

Saturday: I wanted to do a recovery ride without getting insanely bored. So, I've got a little setup now so that I can use my computer while riding. Ha!

Looks like you are close to being able to play drums while you ride.

Had planned to ride to Birdwood in the hills but only the night before realised it was a long weekend. Holiday drivers are maniacs here particularly on some busier road on that route so opted to ride the coast from the city. It was raining in the morning too so was never going to ride my good roadbike.

Took it as a casual ride from the start then it turned into a 100km ride. Actually got back to the car at 95km's so rode around the burbs till 100 clicked over

Will not be able to ride for a week so got in a 101 miler yesterday. First segment started at 3:20AM and back to house for a quick breakfast then met the LBS group. Able to hang on this time and it felt good.

I actually tried to set that up at one point, with just a small drum (tom) on a stand in front of the bike. It didn't go so well and I ended up just drumming on the handlebars (which thankfully are not carbon).

64 miles down to Pinnacles national park and back. A bit windy but beautiful blue sky and green grass.

Almost as wet as last week- even a little hail.

Climbing, including several miles of uphill dirt/single track.

70, 6,500'

Sat: was mid 40's and sunny with not too much wind so a friend and I got out for 50mi. 2500' climbing that kinda snuck up on us. Have had a cold but felt better than expected and we rode really well.

Sun: in normal New England Smarch weather. it was snowing/freezing rain today so did an hour recovery ride on Zwift. Also used it as a chance to clean up my chain and cassette before throwing it on the trainer.

Did my first century ride today, took the day off from work as the weather was supposed to be perfect, just a slight chance of rain later in the day. The weather was indeed amazing, for the first 70 miles, then the sky opened up and it poured for the last 30! lol Still had a great ride, hopefully my first of many centuries!

I was gonna whine about needing longer than usual to recover, then realized I'd ridden 3 of 4 days over the weekend, 18, 21 and 32 miles. And every time was fun. And, comparing data with 2017 and 2018, my averages are about the same.

I'm just impatient since I did need to rest one day, and still can't manage much more than 30 or so miles.

So, pretty good overall. I'll need to find something else to whine about.
