Replace front derailleur?
I have a Giant Boulder SE bike that has a Shimano C101 front derailleur.
There is a black plastic piece next to the adjustment screws that is broke. I can't tell if the piece is decorative or is what is causing shifting issues for me (can't get into 1st gear).
Anyone have advice? Thanks in advance.
(I'd post a pic but don't have enough posts yet?)

Here is a pix courtesy ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SHIMANO-C101-FRONT-DERAILLLEUR-BAG-C/293013324716?hash=item4438f483ac:g:xZcAAOSwE9hckCZz&frcectupt=true
Loss of the black plastic bridge across the mechanism that pushes the cage in and out 'might' loosen things up enough to make a difference but it is not
clear that this piece is structural. You could probably replace it with a more recent FD for $15-20, eg a Claris or Tiagra 8-9 spd. Co-0p if any could probably source a cast-off.
OTOH you might review https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help?query=&sort=postDate+desc&area%5B%5D=52
and look at adjusting the FD section and check your cable/housing for fray/wear first. A frayed cable in the shifter
can be a problem with an easy fix.
If, by 'first gear' you mean the smallest chain wheel, the adjusting screws might be out of position with the plastic broken, but looks
like the piece of metal under the plastic is what the screws are held by. The screws are what determine the limits on how far in and out the FD cage moves.

Thanks for the reply and the info. I've tried some basic adjustment via the screws without much luck but haven't messed with anything else. I also am of the opinion the black piece doesn't do anything of importance but thought I'd get the opinion of the experts here.

OP needs a mountain type. C10X are inexpensive and function well.

Yeah, and I'd get something different. There's a reason that C-101 group was only sold for about one year.

Now that I'm past the 5 post/day limit again, here is what my current derailleur looks like:
