My father is letting me borrow his never ridden and expensive track bike for this summer while I am home from college. I don’t want to scratch up the frame with my krypto chain, so I am going to wrap it, I was thinking electrical tape, but I remember someone talking about self adhesive vinyl. Whets the best method to wrap the frame?

I will put up some pics so you can see the sexiness, before and after naturally.

get a long sock from a thrift store and cut to length

wrap it in some old tubes. looks like sh*t (i used to rock it) but you wont scratch it.

something non adhesive would be best if you are worried about the finish of the frame..... in my experience the electrical tape adhesive can become a sticky mess to clean once you remove the actual tape

heres what i did in order to protect (hide) the decals and the frame- basically 3 different layers- under main and sealing layers- 1st i cleaned wherever there was going to be tape w/ soap and h2o and let dry- then i took some cling wrap and did a nice clean tight single layer on the top and down tube- the width of the sheet was the same distance i wanted to tape so that was sweet-that stuff stix to everything so i had to be real delicate cos wrinkles show thru and cut it with scissors- lay it all down and pull it tight- 2nd layer is gaff tape not the super wide stuff like inch wide or so and run that over the plastic wrap- gaff tape doesnt leave any residue when you lift it off- i swear by this stuff it comes in a butt load of colors- it tears clean but i found once water got under the end where i cut the tape lifted right off- so to combat this i did the 3rd layer and wrapped the ends with a few tight layers w/ electrical tape- it all pulled together and its held up quite nicely-ive only had to do it once- it does seem like a bit much but the bike will love you and itll all be over before you know it-

Go to a sign shop and ask for some vinyl. They'll probably have a color to match your frame.

I thought the title was frame wARp and was fully expecting some noob question like - I totally warped my frame when I tried torching off the braze-ons, how do I bend it back in to shape?

but if its an older frame you run the risk of ruining the decals...at least that is what happened to my old frame when I tried to clean the sticky stuff off...then again I was using straight acetone not goo gone...hmm maybe goo gone would have worked better

I use a layer of inner tube and then wrap electrical tape over the tube.

Also why does your dad have a track bike if he's never ridden it?

I think the best solution is a frame pad. Electrical tape is usually good, but I screwed the decals on my Bob Jackson peeling it off (I think the clear coat over the decals wasn't strong enough). Wrapping inner tubes is pretty good but the rubber can dull the paint a little. Frame pads use velcro and so won't screw the paint at all. Plus they give you something comfy to hold on to.

I used this stuff I think it's made by ACE bandages that only sticks to itself. I found it in the bandage section of my local pharmacy. It is really nice. It has enough padding and won't leave any residue. -Will

I will put up some pictures soon, i need to borrow a camera, and yeah i know i shouldnt lock up an expensive bike, but im going to have to, but im not going to take as many liberties as i do with my own bike. I am most likely going to put a brake on it. I guess i will try gaffers tape + electrical + shrink wrap, as all my old tubes are in storage. The wrap is more to protect the finish. Im not really doing this to hide the bikes worth, I mean unless i want to wrap over the crankset, wheels, stem, and seat post as well, its still going to be obvious this is one expensive bike.

I will second the gaffers tape. That stuff is awesome. My wallet is made from it, and I've been using it for 3 years without it falling apart.

There is also a product made for wrapping automotive wiring harnesses. It is designed to only stick to itself. I don't know how much padding it would provide, but it would make clean up easy. I think 3M makes the best version of it.
