I have a couple most folks don't see...
Badgers that aren't fond of being surprised by a silent approaching 'enemy'
Antelope that will run beside you to see what kind of pace you're capable of...
The antelope can top out right at 60 MPH so they always seem to win out. There's a little bunch out by Harriman that act like they're kind of excited to see me now. They come down by the fence when they see me coming...

A CRAZY ENCOUNTER
A few months ago I am on a Saturday ride. I topped a hill south of the Brazos River and started accelerating on a mile or so of downhill. The road flattened a bit and then dropped down again into the river bottom. When I drop off the second downhill I see specks in the middle of a road way down at the bottom. Too small to be turkey vultures, I figure they are small dogs or something. As I get closer they appear to be coyotes, five or six in a pack and quite busy on their main course of carrion du jour. By now I am really zipping along and they are giving no indication of moving as I careen toward them at more than thirty miles per hour. They don’t even notice me on the bike. They are, so to speak, getting bigger in the windshield with no thought toward moving.
I come closer still...and see....they are cats….big cats. Well, bigger than my house cat but smaller than an African lion. They see me….and start to scatter…..bobcats they are. The biggest of the bunch takes a few leaps in my direction and freezes. His compadres scatter, then he puts the pedal to the metal and heads directly toward me. I’m grabbing brakes and trying not to skid while I veer to the left as I think about the guy who hit a dog on his road bike and did two weeks in the hospital and six months of therapy…..when the crazy cat veers off to my right, makes a U-turn, and parallels me for about 50 yards before careening off through the barbed wire fence into the brush. I never saw that many bobcats in one place before.

in Toronto, most of the animals a fairly tame...racoons, deer in the river valleys, skunks, etc....the wildest animals I see is a pack of stray cats behind the office...they're a mean bunch
The trails at the cottage have deer, fishers, coyotes, wild turkeys, porcupines, skunks, rabbits, other rodents, turkey buzzards, hawks...last year we saw 2 moose and a black bear surprised us (just because it was there...these trails were in town)

A few days ago, I was out on an an early morning ride on a MUP and saw a mother bobcat on the left of the trail, with 4-5 bobcat "kittens" on the right!. Mama was clearly not happy that I was going to be passing between her and the little ones.
I slowed down, made eye contact with the adult cat, and she crossed the trail in front of me, scurrying the babies away from the trail.

Squirrels, including the one I ran over, Great blue herons, turkeys, turtles, rabbits. Various other roadkills and smears.
But the worst and most dangerous are the animals that travel in packs in Plainfield, NJ.

Living in the city of Los Angeles, one doesn't see to much. But I have seen; Posums, squirrels, rattlesnakes, lizards, gopher snakes, rats (big ones), rabbits, wild dogs, and many types of birds including hawks and falcons. When I ride on the beach trail I almost always see dolphins just outside the surf line, and they are jumping and playing.

Geez-that gives me the willies. I probably would have had to have thrown my bike shorts away after the ride.......

I've seen two javalina arguing in the middle of a highway and was once paced by a coyote. Too many snakes, birds, bugs and vermin to mention. Tarantulas are a novelty which I see particularly often during desert rainy season.

I squished a salamander the other day. Earlier this spring a Kildeer did it's broken wing act in front of the bike, I suppose to lure me away from her nest. Almost ran her over.

A blue hering was my best experience. He was on the trail just ahead of me, saw me, and took to flight, just about 10 feet in front of me. Flew down the trail in front of me for about 30 seconds. Flap, flap, I could feel the effect of his wings. What a sight.
Other than that,
A lot of water birds, rabbits, snakes, and a fox or two.

I saw a wild pig next to the memorial for Jennifer Ewing this morning. She was the lady that was killed by a convicted sex offender on the Silver Comet Trail here in Georgia recently.
I've seen all kinds of wildlife out on this trail, but that's the first time I've ever seen a wild pig.

Coolest were three bobcats, apparently a mother and two nearly grown cubs, and a black bear (I live about a mile from the Toiyabe National Forest). We get deer in the yard almost every day, so they don't count. I've xeen many snakes, including rattlers here (Reno area) and in the Coast Range in California. Coyotes are very common, though you hear them more often than you see them. Porcupines, racoons, marmots, occasionally a beaver, jillions of Canada geese (they winter over in the parks here) and other birds. Hawks every day, vultures in summer, quail by the covey. The Dept. of Wildlife trapped three mountain lions about a half-mile from my house a couple of years ago, but they're pretty secretive.

I've seen all kinds of wildlife, including three bucks in velvet which nearly ran me off the road as they burst out of the brush around me. Last ride I saw badger, deer (a doe and two fawns in spots), blue heron, cormorants, western grebe, hummingbirds, bat, white pelicans, fox, and a stringer full of huge rainbow trout that apparently bounced out of a truck before the fisherman got home -- weird but true!

Rattlesnakes
Came within two or three feet of two different rattlesnakes within one 10 minute period while riding a tadpole trike last fall. The ride is a very hilly 13 mile loop within Red Rock, a Nevada State Park west of Las Vegas and is a favorite training ride for many riders. It is not unusual to see rattlesnakes there but these were on the road and a bit too close for comfort. Despite watching very carefully I didn't see any more during the rest of the ride. I was glad.
