Looks like he got away and kept his thieving tools to go rob someone else later.
If one of the honest citizens pepper prayed him, then the theif would have been stuck there, blind coughing and gagging until the police showed up. I always have a small can on me for personal protection and incidents like this. You can buy them for $3-5.

If you sprayed him, he'd probably sue you for assault and win. Unless he threatened you with his knife, which he did do to the security guard.

I check the Portland stolen bike registry and my gosh at least 4 are stolen daily. I just think law enforcement should be doing more to curb the tide. It seems to be catching on like wild piggies making more wild piggies!

Based upon what information? I find that highly unlikely, as the intent of the pepper spray was not malicious. A gun, on the other hand, would be an unreasonable amount of force.

It's immediate, it's gratifying, it sends a message RIGHT THEN RIGHT THERE that this sort of crap isn't to be tolerated. Mind you, I have zero respect for the cops to ever be a force for good in my life.

This is the very reason why it is not justice. Far too often, it serves as an outlet for people's anger and frustration which leads to an inappropriate punishment for the crime incurred, especially in a group setting like the video (pack mentality).

The justice system doesn't exactly meter out an appropriate punishment, either. Slap on the wrist fine, and an "off you go, don't do it again" isn't exactly a deterrent.

It may or may not be justice, but its certainly more of a deterrent. As far as I'm concerned, when you walk up and start taking someone's property, I cant really find any sympathy for what may happen to you.

The reason bike theft, and other theft, is so rampant is that the punishment in most cases is laughable and the thieves know they can usually get away with it. Physical punishment is not legal (too bad) but works very well. If people knew that the consequences of their actions would be painful, they'd probably reconsider. I totally believe that physical punishment for theft should be brought back. Nothing like some good beating for stealing stuff.

The interesting thing for me was how quickly he was able to defeat the lock. I don't think there was a U-lock or heavy chain involved. Probably just a cheap cable lock.
