Tourney 7 speed shifter alternatives

I had a bike mishap and broke the Tourney SL-TX50-7R shifter.
I am having a tough time finding one. No one has stock and they are pricey.
Can I use any Shimano 7 speed like a SL-TX30-7R as a replacement or does the shifter have to match the Tourney rear derailleur?

Any Shimano 7 speed shifter will work.

Yes, any Shimano 7-speed shifter will do.

I'll be honest - in over 40 years of working on bikes, I'd never seen a shifter quite like the Tourney SL-TX50-7R until one showed up on that Columbia bike I'm discussing in my other thread in C&V.

My first reaction: "That's goofy as heck. Thumbie downshifts, pushbutton upshifts."

My second reaction: "Maybe that'll be fun."

So I grafted it onto my commuting bike, shifting a 7-speed 13-25 freewheel using a old Suntour Accushift short-cage derailleur at the other end of the cable.

And it works great. Once I try to get out of the habit of yanking the thumbie down to upshift and instead push the little clicky button. I might keep it there for a while.

Meanwhile: as others have said, any standard 7 speed index shifter (thumb, Rapidfire, bar-end, twist, whatever your preference) should provide acceptable shifting performance.

But if you really want to keep the "mutant lollipop" design of the SL-TX50-7R, then the e-commerce links listed in the replies should be helpful.

That's because the all-plastic TX50 is on the low end of Shimano shifters, usually used by big box bike manufacturers (assembly factories).

Any LBS will have new parts that will be an immediate upgrade, Shimano or not.

This is also the time to consider a grip shifter if you prefer.

This is an idea, but if you decide to do this, make sure you get the ones compatible with Shimano derailleurs.

Can anyone suggest a better shifter than the Tourney. It is a plastic affair and quite fragile. It does work well though.
I can't use a grip shifter because it is on a fat ebike and there is a throttle control between the brake and a small handle grip on the right side.

I wouldn't really recommend any shifter to replace a tourney shifter but a bike that doesn't have tourney anywhere near it. Tourney is designed to be purely low initial cost and that is about it, no durability or quality in sight but as much cost cutting but still have something semi functional. Microshift makes an 8 speed thumb shifter which would be of some quality but you would really want to have 8 gears at the back since it is an 8 speed shifter but 8 speed these days is also of low quality. 8 speed came out in the late 80s and early 90s so 30 years ago now we are in the 12 speed era so the quality really sort of hits at 10 speed and sometimes you can find some bits of 9 speed that is still decent and not just old stuff.

Aliexpress is filled with shifters, seven speed or otherwise. I'd just throw one of those on and be done with it.

Yes, that would be the job on the LBS.

Don't worry about it.

Altus is the one you want. Much better than a Tourney. Grant Peterson says it's his favorite and it's easy for me to see why. I've used it up to 9 speed on friction.

My mistake. sorry.

Yes. The old Deore XT shifters:

They are all metal and they will last you till the end of time. Only drawback is that they are not ratcheting shifters. It's just a simple indexed lever.

What I would do is get a 10 speed microshift shifter and run it in friction mode. It's my favorite method and has for me eliminated all fussiness of perfect cable tension and perfectly lubricated and micro adjusted components. Once you learn how to properly shift all you need is to have the inside and outside limits of the derailleur set. With the 10 speed friction I can change to a different wheel cassette set up very simply.

Durable indeed, but I'm not sure if archaeologists thousands of years from now will find them in quite the same numbers as surviving Chicago forged Schwinn frames.

The fact that the OP is asking this question here implies he is doing the work himself. What is your point to your remark?

You can buy a lot of other shifters for what they get out of those.

My experiment with the "mutant lollipop" shifter continues. So far, so good. On a short descent I did accidentally try to force the thumbie downward without pushing the button, but it seems to have forgiven me.

Microshift 8 speed, or other Shimano compatible 8 speed would probably work, you would just have an unused click on the shifter.

Literally any 7speed shimano trigger shifters will be fine- even other Tourneys that don't have that stupid button, I never seen before.
