I only got out once this week for a short ride and I'm feeling a bit pudgy. I have to pass on the 72 mile event ride here tomorrow so I can watch my daughter at her first gymnastics meet, which is a 3 hour drive each way. Sunday I plan to get out for a ride with NealH who is doing the event ride on Sat.

We did a standard 50 miler today, but last Wednesday we did a fun 100. Averaged 15.6 mph (which is very fast for me) and completed it in 6:23 of saddle time. 3000 feet of climbing. We had a ball.

I took a second consecutive day off. The difference between tandem and half-bike reared its ugly head on Wed. evening after my birthday ride. I have quad muscles that were recruited on Wed. that had sandbagged on our tandem tour, and going downstairs I feel them complaining. So it seemed prudent to rest yet another day.

Tomorrow, however, is another day, heh, heh...

I started a new temp job a few weeks ago. In the second week, they cut us down to a 4-day week. So I was able to ride on any of 3 days in the week, and usually did, if the weather permitted.* This was my first 5-day week in awhile, and I hadn't ridden since Sunday. So, even though the weather sucks (showers on and off all day) I got on the bike and road the 5 miles into town. The relative I mooch car rides from is out of town for the day, and I was going stir crazy at the house.

The ride out wasn't that bad. I should have left a half hour earlier, before it really started to pour, but I made it alright. I'm waiting for weather.com to cue me to a break in the rain. Then I'll roll down the hill and get some lunch, do a little shopping, stop back at the library for a bit, and head back home. The 3-5 pm window is supposed to be not so rainy as it will be later.

I will admit I've googulled up info on rainsuits, rain capes and rain pants in the last hour or so. I had a "waterproof" windbreaker on, and I wrapped the bag I keep on my seatpost rack in a plastic trash bag to keep the rain from getting at my tool kit and other stuff.

The weatherfolks say that tommorow will be sunny, and my Giants play at night, so I should get a bunch of miles in. I must say, after staying off the bike for 5 days, my legs really felt the uphills! One also has to take care when encountering wet leaves, one of the universe's most slippery substances.

Sometimes, ya just gotta ride!

Kevin

*No, I'm not bike commuting. I've done the 30-mile round trip to my latest work site once, and while I'll do it again when I can't catch a ride, one of my family members would have a coronary if I attempted that on a regular basis, especially in cold and/or wet weather. There's already kvetching about not being home in time to eat dinner as early as someone else likes to. Gahh! To be financially able to live on one's own, if one chooses to! There's one of life's seldom reflected upon pleasures.

Did a nice little 34 miler today. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12242

Went to the usual meet place for the Sat 7:30 AM club ride, but there was a little rain in the air, and the weather radar showed a "storm" off the coast and moving out way slowly. The prediction was for 11 am rain, so while most of the "wimps" put their bike back in the car and drove home, a few brave souls (fools?) set out. We broke into a B and C group, and I hung back with the C group with a buddy.

As it turned out, we were brave souls, and were rewarded for our courage. The ride was clear and dry, save a few sprinkles. The clouds off the coast kept the sun load down, so the temps stayed in the mid 70s.

Saturday 10/24/09... I did a slow 23.04 mile flat, solo ride this afternoon. The legs are still not up to speed, very weak (I thought it would come back a little faster than this). Weather was just outstanding today clear sky little wind. Oh well it is what it is.......

All is well in Slo Spoke Jim's world.

23.04 (s)miles today
370.40 (s)miles this month
5570.03 (s)miles this year

53 miles today in 3 hours. The day started cold with rain and wet streets. I went out at 1:00pm and the sun came out and the streets were dry. I had a great ride, much better than expected. I'll ride again tomorrow. If it stays dry tonight, I'll leave the rain pants at home!

Only 300 miles for September. We have had the coldest September in many years, one of the coldest on record. heavy & frequent rain too.

I'll need to do two 50 miles rides and one century before the end of the month.

I'm @ 4412 miles YTD and would like to reach 5000 before December.

Michael

I don't think so.
We have to cross 5 lanes of highway to get up to the bridge.

We don't have any hills here, so riders use the bridge to get some practice.

Some of you guys have a lot of patience. Rides longer than 4.5 hours as your Saturday/Sunday ride seem to last forever. Did 110K in 4.17 yesterday, taking advantage of one of the last sunny days here in Vancouver. It was chilly when we started at 9:00AM but warmed up. A bit of a headwind on the second half.

Ken,
Yeah they are 26 incher's and I didn't fall, I went down into a compression ( a big dip if you will)and back up and I think I compressed my back somehow. I was standing on the pedals the whole time and used my legs and front forks to take the compression but...I don't know it was weird and still hurts a bit today.

Started out this morning (10/25) and it was 49 degrees out, 49 miles later it was 54. The last 20 something miles were into a headwind and I was looking for shortcuts to get home faster. All in all not too bad as I rode a new route, well had new sections added to a route I use a lot. It was a beautiful morning though and very colorful what with the leaves changing and all.

Started with temp at 45 this morning with wet pavement and pile of leaves making it slippery if you're not careful and finished the ride with 36 miles. October will be a low mile ride, currently 144 total with 5 days so far of riding. Hoping to finish with at least 200 miles this month.

61 miles in three hours and thirty five minutes. I averaged more than 19 mph for the first 30 miles with the help of a tail wind.

I kept it slow on the second half. Only one ten minute break.

115 miles this weekend. This time of the year you have to ride as much as possible when the weather permits.

Rode the Hilly Hundred today and yesterday. The weather yesterday was cool and breezy. Very nice today - warmer and more sun. 41.5mph on one downhill. Yee-ha!
Made it up all the hills except Mt. Tabor - arrgh!
Makes me feel less of an old wretch to see this young fella hiking up.
