New bike - Flat Bar

New bike - Flat Bar
Hi from Australia,

Slowly getting into cycling and want to upgrade my chunky old Hybrid with something newer.

Looking at a Flat bar road bike.

Wanting to increase my fitness levels and clock up around 20-30km a week. Mainly bike paths and road.

Have my eyes on the Cannondale Quick 4 2016 at the moment or another similar with carbon fork perhaps a Polygon Helios?

I'm tall @ 6'4" and 42 y/o. What frame size do you suggest?

Want a light framed bike with carbon forks.

My budget is no more than $1000 (AUD) for the bike.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Cheers

Muzza

That Quick is broadly similar to my Fuji Absolute and should be well suited to your intended riding. I was getting back into cycling when I bought it and wanted a bike for use similar to yours. My distance goals were well above yours however and I quickly reached the limitations of a flat bar. In the end I switched over to a trekking bar for a while and finally to a Jones Loop H bar which is a mountain bike bar by intent but quite nice for distance riding on a "flat bar" road bike too. If you intend to ride farther than your goals stated above some day you might want to look at entry level road bikes or touring bikes with drop bars which are much better suited to long rides. Or you can just change the handlebars when that day comes, as I ended up doing. My advice on size would be to find a good local shop and have them give you their opinion on that. They will also do a proper fit for you once you choose a bike and that will make a big difference as well. Welcome to cycling, it is a great way to get exercise, meet people, and see the country/world!

At 6'4", you will need a very large frame. At least 62 cm, maybe larger.

Any reason you want a flat bar? Drop bars are far more versatile.

Shimano Au shows a 'fitness bike' groupset, essentially a flat bar road bike wheel combination.

see (brand neutral) who may have spec'd that in their parts pick menu..

or get with a dealer ready to change some components on an otherwise well fitting bike frame ,

to suit your desires..

I cannot do your shopping for you , ask your favorite bike shop..
