Joules is the power you are applying to the crank.
Calories is the amount of food/fat you burned.
There's an conversion factor that is different for different people.
If it was an issue of the definition of units, no one would care that much.

All I can say is that I'm very happy with my 520. I bought mine knowing that I wouldn't be using many of the functions but I wanted something I could grow into. I still don't have a power meter, I use the heart rate strap and cadence function only occasionally and hardly use the map function. I don't use the lap functions etc. When I think about it I'm probably only using about 60% of what it can actually do.

I have been a fan of REI since they sold ice axes out of a garage, but they are having some serious management issues and screwing up a lot.
The Garmin 520+ was down to $205 in May and they cancelled my order after it was placed online.
Spent an hour trying to get it straightened out and the the order disappeared.
Store pick ups hve been a cluster too, in a way that was clearly top down fumbling by management.
Sad to see that going on, especially in what is going to be a rough market ahead.
