Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rattling Trek Madone SLR 7 Disk

My 4 month old Madone SLR 7 Disk has been making a rattling noise almost from the first day. It only occurs on rough road surfaces and seems to be coming from the left side of the bike, maybe towards the front(ish)? Has anyone experienced this? Were you able to remedy the noise, and if so, how?

I don't have a Madone, but I've experienced similar with my Domane, primarily on really jarring hits. I suspect that it's the internally routed hydro hose in the downtube. I haven't checked it out any further because it's not a constant, bothersome rattle, but you might want to pull the access panel under the bottle holder and see if the hose is loose and what you can do to secure it.

Take it back to the shop you got it from and ask them to fix it.
When you pay that much for a bike it should be rattle free.

Check the cable/wire routing where it enters the bike. There may be a plastic grommet that helps seal the hole in the frame from the elements. Said grommet may have been pushed/pulled into the frame. If you pick up the bike and tilt it forward and back, you may hear the grommet sliding on the cable.

"The 2019 Madone SLR is an extremely high maintenance bike," according to Trek-Segafredo lead mechanic at last weekends Tour of California. Owning one myself, I concur!

Thats my first thought as well, and I’ll remove the access plate and check for loose cable/line routing. Barring anything obvious I’ll have my LBS look it over as well.

Yeah, I had to steel myself (carbon myself?) to that idea even before I purchased it. But, dang, it’s fast!!!

I looked under the down-tube plate and find that that is where the battery is mounted (w/ zip ties). If the wiring/hoses are rattling in that area it would have to be closer to the headset end or BB end of the down-tube. I suppose I could jamb some rubber foam or bubble wrap down there and see what happens. I think I'd tie any foam with strong string so I can pull it back out if needs be.

Madones are noisy bikes. I have a 9 series and it will make noise on rough pavement. There is not a whole lot that be done. It is a lot of cables squeezed into a small area.
