Perfect weather - Sunny, high of 75, and light winds ! Rode 67 miles up to Libertyville.
Ten minutes into the ride, I spotted some interesting stuff on the curb. What we have here is an early 80s Phase Linear 7000 Series 2 Micro Scan Cassette Deck. Momentarily though about calling the wife (it was 8 am), but decided if it was still there on the way home, I would snag it.
The North Shore Century was today and our paths would cross occasionally. Route was marked with big, red “N”s
Crossing the Des Plaines River - always a treat!
The Rockland School ready for another batch of students.
Libertyville neighborhoods are dotted with these small houses, which are actually pumping stations. Nice way to blend infrastructure into a residential area. The giant pipe coming out of the side belies its true purpose.
Had a snack on the small island in Lake Butler. Saw a couple of Herons.
The old spaghetti factory is still standing. Haven’t been up this way in a couple of years.
On the way home, I passed through Lake Bluff. They have a vintage Thunderbolt1003A civil defense siren that I been wanting to hunt down. I had to poke around town a bit, but found it over by Artesian Park. Supposedly they fire it up on the 4th of July and when Santa Claus is in town.
When I got close to home, I checked back on the cassette deck. Not surprisingly, it was gone. Found out it was the same model that appeared in Risky Business. Weighs 38 pounds and cost $1400 BITD. Should have called the wife. Almost as old as my bike - LOL!

Took a ride up to Alma and did a bit of trail riding on the Jeunet that I'm working on for a horrible Halloween bike light rain and bit cold.

Been out of town for the last few weeks coaching the men's Lightweight Quadruple Sculls for Team USA at the Rowing World Championships. .
First a two week camp in Henley on Thames, England to prep for the World Championships. One of the things I love about Henley is that you coach from a bike path along the river...
Last day of pre-Worlds Camp was a time trial on the 2012 Olympic Course:
(that's me on the Bianchi...)
Then on to Belgrade for the World Championships
The race course is on Sava Lake, a man made lake off the Sava River. Here is a view of the starting platform looking down the course.
The lake has bike paths along both sides and cafes and beach clubs along its length.
The architecture in Belgrade is an interesting mix of crumbling cold war era brutalism
And super modern brand new (our hotel)
End result:

Somewhat cooler temps arrived with high of only 92 or so.
That sure beats 105 or more.
I rode my Rivendell Sam Hillborne 32 miles yesterday.
Pic is at White Rock Lake.
There were many sailboats out on a nice Sunday morning.

My son and I spent the weekend bike camping on Orcas Island.
Saturday morning we left the campsite and rode up Mt. Constitution.
Riding with Philip in the San Juan's this weekend! by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr
The descent was a super fun although you really need to keep your speed in check on that steep, twisty road.

We had brought along our swimming gear and stopped at Mountain Lake on the lower flanks of the mountain with the thought we’d go swimming.

It was still fairly early and the day hadn’t heated up yet so we decided to ride to Obstruction Pass State Park instead.
Locking the bikes in the parking lot, it’s a fairly short hike down to the beach.
We spent the better part of the afternoon alternating between swimming and warming ourselves like lizards on the beach.

We stopped in nearby Buck Bay on the return to camp for some fresh shooters and beer out on the lawn overlooking the bay.

We took our time going back to the mainland on Sunday stopping for morning lattes at West Beach on our way to the Ferry dock.

Started to drizzle when I got to the Boiceville trailhead, and by the time I was a mile past the mid-point it was raining right proper through the canopy of trees overhead so I did an about face. In any event a drizzly ride is better than no ride, right?

I rode 10 miles today in around 80 degree temps.
What a welcome change from all the 100 and 100 plus days over this summer!
Rode for about 3/4's of a mile along this nice creek side trail and snapped a few pics.
Bike is a hybridized Gary Fisher MTB.
One pic shows some fishing bobbers / floats at least 15 feet up in tree branch.
That must have happened quite a while back when the area had significant enough rain to cause creek to get that high.

The area looks pretty green.
I particularly like the one through the handlebar showing the green growth along the path and green all up ahead.
I think riding for miles along such a path might be so peaceful possibly mesmerizing.

Another day above the ground. Another day I can still ride drop bars. Another day I don't need an e-bike.
Decided to stick around home this morning rather than venture over into Chester County. Too busy over there today. So I just rode about 14 miles through all the local neighborhoods. Barely a car moving anywhere. Nice and quiet. I chose the Mule today, the first time I've ridden it since my adventure up on the Erie Canal back in June. I'd swapped the Tour Ride rough stuff tires for the Paselas so that dropped a pound and, of course no touring luggage. That bike just rides so nice.
Somebody really should buy that Voyageur that rccardr is selling. It tours fully loaded well but also just zips around the neighborhoods well. I'm glad I gottem one. Doc's is much cleaner than mine. Mules only get a brush down once-n-awhile, not the shinny stuff like his.
edit: ok to back over to Chester County tomorrow. They got him this morning.

Looks like you caught a fish or turtle yourself. I'd say errant casting on the bobbers. There is a telephone line along the bay trail that looks like a spider web of lures and weights from the shore casters.

Just a few shots from last week's abject failure at a DIY Audax. It was supposed to be September's RRTY ride; up around the outskirts of Bristol, over the Severn Bridge into Wales, a nice climb then back to the bridge via a traffic free trail, and back through the centre of Bristol.
And the ride started well - I managed to get on the road early, and made good time for the first 50km up around Ashton Court and through the Avon Gorge, passing under Clifton Suspension Bridge. Getting through Avonmouth though was another thing. Lots of building and development work, roadworks, road closures, and diversions cost me a lot of time getting back on track.
The section from Avonmouth to the Severn Bridge was a contrast - straight from busy industrial and warehousing areas into narrow lanes through quiet countryside. The bridge crossing was as spectacular as always, although being separated from oncoming 70mph traffic by nothing more than a cable barrier is a little unnerving at first. Coming off the cyclepath into the heavy traffic in Chepstow was an unpleasant experience, and I was very happy to swing off the main onto the road up to Devauden after a few minutes.
The climb from Chepstow to Devauden was as enjoyable as a long climb can be - a quiet road, well surfaced, steady manageable gradient, surrounded by beautiful countryside. A quick stop in the village for a drink then it was downhill all the way towards Tintern. Encountering a road closure sign partway down I hesitated until a couple of local riders came up the hill to tell me the road was passable on a bike. It was, although I had to walk at a couple of points, and I carried on down, following the Anghidi River into Tintern.
A stop at the cafe in Tintern cost more time - as I was behind schedule I arrived at lunchtime on a hot Saturday so they were very busy and there was a wait for food. It was a nice place to wait though, and I met a few riders from Ross CC, one of whom was on a RRA in beautiful condition. We exchanged compliments about Raleighs and Motobecanes before heading off in different directions alongside the Wye.
Crossing the old bridge in Tintern I joined the Tidenham trail - another delay due to the sheer number of people out walking in the afternoon. Just as the crowds started thinning out about a mile down from Tintern I had the first puncture of the day. Tube changed I carried on down the trail, passing through the Tidenham Tunnel. The tunnel's an old railway tunnel about half a mile long and is home to a colony of bats. Conservation measures to safeguard the bats include a ban on bike lights and very dim lighting so it as another very slow section.
Out of the tunnel and into the sunlight it was back on tarmac and a chance to finally make up for lost time. Until the pothole - no chance to avoid it due to traffic so it was brakes hard on. Needless to say that didn't make much difference, the back tyre blew with an impressive bang, Another stop, another change of tube, and it was immediately apparent the wheel was off centre. A closer look showed two broken spokes, and after putting the wheel back in with the hope of just riding carefully home I realised the back brake wasn't working. Another quick look showed an empty brake pad holder. A much longer look back up the road failed to find the brake pad.
So, not wanting to chance riding through a busy city with a well laden bike on steel rims with only one brake I made the phone call of shame to my wife, and arranged to meet her back at the English side of the bridge. It was just over 10 miles, and it took nearly an hour and a half. My wife timed her trip to the Severn services perfectly and arrived just a few minutes after me - I bought a large bouquet of flowers the next day.
Early morning at Weston sea front

Road closed? Not if you're on a bike

There's something missing here

Thanks for that. It often is peaceful and mesmerizing, in fact I had my head wrapped too tightly around a bit of nonsense that got loosened up some thanks to that short ride.

Today is first leg of the journey out to Oregon for the Rectangle Ride. Im stopping off in Colorado for a nieces wedding. Im in Avon right now, not terribly far from zukahn1 stomping grounds. Ive always wanted to ride my bike to the airport - Ive ridden by it several times and last time out there spotted a bike rack. My wife and kid were on a different flight so I handed the checked bag off to her and rode the ten miles out there, arriving in perfect time for the flight. It was warmer than I expected so a little lathered up when I got there but apparently didnt look too suspicious going through security.

A ride from North Seattle to Everett on the Interurban Trail
Everett Marina, huge, built with bucks from Japan
Inside the old Weyerhaeuser HQ from 1920, now restored.
Wine lockers for rent in the company vault.
Lot of wood from the mills of 100 years ago
Main building
Overlooking from up the hill. We got detoured out of the area due to a bomb threat at the naval base. Ugh

After 18 days of Covid Lockdown, finally able to get outside and ride again.
Thankfully the Lockdown Area included The Lab, so all needed/unnecessary maintenance and modification is completely up to date.
A cautious 50% of my usual daily escapade distance but at the usual pace, so all seems well.
