700x35 on Carretera Austral ?
Hola,
Would 700x35c (37-622) Schwalbe plus tour tyres be ok (feasible) for the carretera Austral ? And what they call the "ripio" I believe ?
I have a hybrid bike (giant fcr3). I just tried to put 700x40c but they are too high for my front fork...only 1 or 2mm clearance...
Thanks
Georges

I did it on a pair of 700x38 Schwalbe Marathon Deluxe. It's do-able, but won't always be fun.

You can try going with 35mm tires, but I believe you will suffer a lot. "Ripio" means loose gravel which can be deep there at times with lots of washboards. It is considered one of the most beautiful parts of the world but the road is supposed to be ruthless on top the inclement weather. Most people go with expedition touring bikes with much wider tires. Having said this, the Chilean government had a project a few years ago to pave it, but I have no idea how much they completed. There was strong opposition from people in some geographical areas who wanted to avoid the easy access to virtually untouched/virgin areas.
