I'm hoping for ideas on how and where to mount a light like

on this bike



I suppose the headlight is meant to be mounted on the front brake or thereabouts. But on the bike in question, that location is blocked by the porteur rack. Fender mounting will also run afoul of the rack. Oh, I'm going to cover the porteur rack's surface with a thin sheet of aluminum, with upturned edges, to form a sort of "tray".

I'd like to hang the light off the underside of the rack, but these lights need to be right side up.

This is for a bike my daughter will take to college. So it will be locked in racks, bumped and banged some, sit out in the rain all day, etc. The reason I wanted to tuck the light up under the rack was that it might be slightly protected.

Any ideas? What would you do?

use the eyelets on the edge of the rack top. Mount the light under the rack. You could make something or modify the mount. Lots of pictures out there on the web, I'm surprised nobody answered this.

If that's one of the stainless VO racks like I think it is, you can have a mount brazed or welded to it. But people use p-clamps as well as those eyelets.

Sure, people do that all the time. Use an old centerpull brake arm or something like Soma Feed: Wingmann Light Mount to mount the light to one of the threaded eyelets on the rack.

Get someone to add a Brazed on fitting .. on that strut you got lots of frame builders in Portland. hire one to do the job

if its chromed .. they should be able to Fabricate something to firmly Bolt around the strut.

OR buy this and enlarge the hole for the quill bolt to pass thru Stem Cap Light Mount from Paul Component Engineering

How about the other side of the handlebar ?

You can fit a Planet Bike wired Dynamo Super Flash on either its a handle bar mount. , & take it off and pocket it, when you park



this will go on the non Bell side of the bars ,. too Mounting Lights from Peter White Cycles for the bolt on headlights.

The reason I haven't put a porteur on my commuter is that they are too wide for the racks here.

Thanks for the ideas. I also wonder if the porteur rack will work for her. Anyway, I looked at the various mounts. I think I can bend one and bolt it to the leading tip of the front fender, to position the light under the leading edge of the rack. Maybe that will protect the light from getting banged up.

I'm not sure if the light will then vibrate too much, we'll see how rigid the fender is, I could also fabricate a stay from leading edge of rack to leading edge of fender.

I just read on Peter White's page that these light have to be mounted at a certain height, about fork crown level, for the beam to work well.

I would just opt for the handlebars. But where is the dynamo on that? I have the same light and it throws a lot of light on the road without any spill. Mine is mounted on the brake bolt with the standard mount. The problem with that position is that I have a shadow from the wheel.

There's no dyno hub yet. The whole idea came about when I realized Shimano makes an inexpensive genhub that is close enough in dimensions to the current Maillard high flange front hub, that I can rebuild the wheel around it. That's a job for this summer. Bike is going to get dynohub, lights, some reflective tape, and then sent off to earn its keep as a college ride. There is a bike cage at the dorm.

I put dyno lights on my daughter's bike after I realized that her battery lights weren't working and she was still riding. I think it was a pretty good investment.

Never met anyone who in hindsight regretted their expenditure on a good dyno-hub lighting setup.
I use a Son28 with Edelux and Philips Lumiring tail-light.
Used with an Ewerk with cache battery it keeps my Garmin and phone charged.

As to your quandary about mounting your light, let me know what you think of this:

I used the eylets and a 1/2-3/4 inch plastic spacer to mount it upright on the side of the rack. It works fine.
You have to be careful not to bang it up when parking it, but you get used to that.

Same here. At present I'm using a Shimano dynohub with a cheap LED headlight under the front rack of my hybrid and it works OK. But I've ordered a Cyo Premium, and want to use it exactly as it was intended to be. So probably I'll mount it on the fork crown, remove the front rack and use only the rear one.

I ended up getting a tab welded to one of my racks stays (that went to my forks brake bosses).
Seems sturdy enough after a couple of hundred km's now and hasn't fallen off.

The OP's desire to mount underneath the rack to protect the light sounds like decent logic.



I like your rack OP and think its a good utilitarian addition to your (daughters) Peugeot bike.
