Wow...cool. I was a college freshman when this thread started! I was at Michigan State, where freshmen cannot have cars on campus. I got pretty good at transportation riding and winter riding that year, and obviously, never quit riding.

When the thread started, was in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD. Currently in the suburbs of Louisville, KY. Would like to move to southeastern PA--lots of long time friends there, along with a good many rail-trails and mtn.bike trails.

This has to be the ultimate zombie thread. When this thread started I was practicing in my specialty in a large hospital in Portland, Oregon. Running a lot of marathons. And married. Before I got really sick.

In 1999 I was kind of in the cycling doldrums…Just cycle commuting, not even in winter as I recall. That was between an active touring phase up until 1988, and resumption of road cycling in 2006.

I stumbled upon this Forum [in 2008] from another totally unrelated Blog and I was quite impressed at the volume of activity and range of interests. Back in the 60’s in the Motor City, I had an “English Racer,’ and longed to tour at about age 14, but then joined the car culture.
In Ann Arbor MI [University of Michigan…to tweak @wipekitty
] in the 70’s I really realized the utility of bicycles for commuting, and began touring on a five-speed Schwinn Suburban, but soon bought a Mercier as did my girlfriend, later my wife. We toured in Michigan and Ontario.
In 1977 we moved to Boston on our bikes, as a bicycling honeymoon from Los Angeles to Washington, DC and then took the train up to Boston. We have toured in New England and the Maritime Provinces, and one trip to the DelMarVa peninsula. …

For me personally, the 1990’s were the doldrums of bicycling, as the children were young, and I was involved with my career, until my renaissance in about 2006.

I often recall how BF played such a vital part in getting me out on the street and in better health....

I have been an avid cyclist, as a lifestyle since about 1972… I happened serendipitously on Bike Forums in 2008, and it was frankly incredible to find a community that shared so many concerns I had kept to myself as a lone cyclist.
This enthusiasm has definitely increased my enjoyment of cycling. As far as improving it, what I have gotten directly from BF are:

- the motivation and tips to ride in rain, and wintry roads, i.e. studded tires
- the Fifty-Plus Annual rides that motivate me to train in the nice weather
- the safety tip to watch the front wheels of a car rather than the body or hood to anticipate what the driver is going to do
- the opportunity to post and literally "journal" my thoughts and activities about cycling and lifestyle (even if nobody else reads them), but which I wouldn't write down otherwise.

The Earth responses remind me of something I wrote in kindergarten for a "write your address" assignment. I'd written my full address, then added United States, North America, Western Hemisphere, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, Universe. (I was really geeky, even then). Anyway, I'm currently in a small town in the northeast section of Ohio, where it snows a lot for nearly half the year. Still in the same country, hemisphere, and galaxy, although sometimes I'm not so certain about which universe.

Greenville, SC. Currently taking Lyrica and my balance is all F****d up. Bike is in barn, tires flat, gathering dust. Can anyone take Lyrica and still ride a 2 wheeler?
In 1999 I was knee deep in a Y2k project team. I was traveling in USA, Canada and Mexico. Got to visit France, UK and many places
working for Michelin that otherwise would have never seen. Cape Breton, NS comes to mind as a wonderful place to ride. Retired Jan 31, 2000. Two weeks later had a heart attack.
Y2k project almosr killed me.

I was om Neurontin (gabapentin), basically the same thing as Lyrica, for a long time. My balance was much worse on it. we stopped it finally. Balance is much better now and my neuropathy is no worse. Some people take it for bipolar type 1, which I also have, and the bp1 is def not worse off the Neurontin. I really don't think it was doing anything for me. So, maybe look into a different med option for yourself. It might help you out.
