Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was always told to aim for 1 liter an hour, plus electrolytes for any workout lasting over an hour. GU, cliffshots, whatever you can stand to drink/eat that gets you the right set of fuels. Maybe these marathon/etc organizers need to think about adding a certain amount of electrolyte to the water at the feed areas?

happens all the time at places like the grand canyon. tourists are bombarded with so many warnings about staying hydrated that some take it too literally and down gallons of water in a short time period. supposedly your cell walls start actually leaking...

Sounds about right. They say that if you have water or diluted gatorade with you when working out, your body will naturally crave pretty much whatever it needs, and you don't really need to force it on yourself.

I usually have a 1 quart Tupperware bottle that I make regular Gatorade in with some ice to dilute a bit. I usually end up drinking the whole thing during my 1 hour workout on the trainer by just taking a gulp every few minutes or so, when I get a "dry" feeling.

So far, I haven't had any problems.

There is a condition called hyponatremia (probably spelled wrong) that happens when you drink so much water that it washes all the salt out of your blood. Without salt you cannot retain water. Thus, a strange irony, too much water may lead to dehydration. Mostly, it is people on low-salt diets that have to worry about this. The rest of us are probably getting more than enough salt.

BTW- I am not a doctor so don't do anything rash (like eating spoonfulls of salt) based on my words.

I feel dumber for reading that article. No ***** you shouldn't go downing gallons and gallons of water without eating anything else and then go and run for 4 hours. Who does that? And such wonderful advice to avoid overhydrating, "drink when you are thirsty". How about "eat something with sodium in it when you exercise for multiple hours".

Salt decline is noticable on long aerobic exercise, isn't it?
I didn't think about it last summer... this year maybe it will help if I bring salt with me on a ride (blood pressure)

Mix your water with equal amount of scotch whiskey to prevent any health risks.
