Reading and Riding
I ride the bike almost every day, especially in the very fine weather we are having in the NE. Frequently I'll take a book and stop at the town beach on Narragansett Bay for an hour or two to read. Whether at the beech or at home later, since the library is closed, I've been re-reading some of my own books that were last read 30 years ago. One was a biography of Ben Franklin. The more I read, the more I was amazed by the man and his range of interests. I've also re-read "The March of Folly" by the historian Barbra Tuchman. This book is about decisions and courses of action undertaken by great powers that were completely counter to their best interests and having another course of action open to them. Two examples from the book are the invasion of Russia by Napolean and the invasion of Russia by Hitler, both actions leading to major defeats of the invaders. On the lighter side, I just finished Bill Bryson's humorous take on "The Mother Tongue, English and How it Got That Way". All about where our words and their use have come from, and much else about language and where it might be going, maybe. A fun read at a dark time. Some of you older folks may remember a TV program named Sunday Morning with Charles Kurault about traveling around America and the small towns and hidden byways and the characters who live here. This was a favorite program for me as I lived in such a place. He wrote two books about those travels and I'm now looking forward to re-reading one of them.
For those of you interested in Americana, when we were a united nation, the link shows some footage of some of those road trips.
