Who uses VAM?

In the wind
I have a page set up on my garmin that shows VAM, HR, cadence and % gradient. I find it helps me when climbing because I get a sense for when I'm in the zone of what I can sustain for longer climbs. If I get above 1000, I'm probably going to blow up.

1000 meters per hour? I'm lucky if I can do 1000 meters in a day.

Handy for researching potential Everesting venues.
In terms of route plan, if you really want to get the maximum climbing for your time it can let you know where to go.
I have a couple of PRs where my VAM approaches 1,000, always on short steep climbs with a fast run up.

I can easily hit 1000 on gradients up to 12%, but on longer climbs if I keep it under 700 then I can sustain it for up to an hour.
Pretty sure I am not an exceptional climber. If I had a power meter I would likely have a better way to measure my efforts, but I find VAM gives me a useful number.

Non omnino gravis
I'm a career 600VAM man, and know that if I lean on it any harder than that, the day is gonna get long... or short, depending. I have it on my "ascent" data page, along with total ascent, current elevation, current grade, etc.
I'm not looking at it if the climb is shorter than say... half an hour. Shorter'n half hour is a bump.

VAM data is included on the Elevate extension for Strava. I'm not much of a climber and there are no mountains here. It's all roller coasters, lots of short, steep punchy climbettes. On a good day I can manage 650. Usually closer to 570. I'm aiming for 700 but I doubt I'll ever do better than that. I got restarted cycling too late at age 57. At 62 things don't get much better.
