NEED Binding bolt for 2003 Iron Horse Intrepid

Hello,

I'm looking for a replacement binding bolt for the seat on my 2003 Iron Horse Intrepid.

Some photos are here:

imgur [DOT] com/gallery/4Fk0vQ2

I'm looking for a bolt driven wedge that fits into a hole on my bike's frame near the seat post, on the top tube/down tube junction.

This bolt is what secures the seat at the preferred height. Similar to many Aegis models.

If any one has any info on where I could find one or a suitable alternative that would be massively appreciated. If anyone has one that they'd be willing
to part with, that'd be amazing. Thanks

Can you post to a photo sharing site then type out the link here using "dot" or "at" to avoid the auto censor? Andy

As stated above, pictures always help. The the size you need also. You might want to search Ebay. I have purchased a couple via that route.

Found this on an old thread on paceline. Seems a machinist or even a home machinist could fab one up relatively easy out of some round aluminium stock.

"I had an Aro Svelte for a few years. The seatpost mechanism was one of the reasons I got the bike, because it was, like much of the design, so well considered.

I don't have a picture of it, but this is what i remember... ordered as to how I imagine it was made. There was an aluminum barrel, the diameter of the hole in the frame, and just under the length. The outside edges were turned, to eliminate rough edges. I expect the center was identified by a score line all the way around the turning. The barrel was then hollowed in the center on one surface so the arc created would mate with the seatpost, said another way, the radius of the scooped out arc was the same as the seat post. Then a pilot hole drilled in the barrel, lengthwise, suitable for a tap for the diameter of securing screw running through the barrel. Then, the barrel would be cut in half. Then the side with the end of the securing allen screw would be tapped. The side to accept the head of the allen screw would be drilled so the screw could slide through to the tapped side, and counter sunk so the head would sit in a mating hollow in the face of the barrel.

Now you have a clamp, which does not rely on clamping the carbon frame to allow the seatpost height to be secure. It is actually a very simple mechanism. It may be necessary to file off some additional material from the cut in the center, to allow the clamp to be fully effective. Obviously, the mating screw needs to be the right length. Anyone with a little metal lathe and a cutoff piece of aluminum rod could make it.

I hope this recollection is useful."

I could make one for you, provided that you are in the US for shipping purposes. I would need you to take some accurate measurements of the diameter of the hole, diameter of the seatpost, overall width of the frame at the hole and some idea of how far the post protrudes into the hole. You could stick various sized things in the hole until you find one that fits tightly against the post and then subtract the width of that from the diameter of the hole.

I think they need a minimum number of posts to be able to PM.

I suspect it looked more like this, with one on each side of the post.

Pretty much what I envisioned except maybe tapped/drilled hole possibly offset from centerline depending on how far the seatpost intrudes. One tapped, one drilled & countersunk on the outside.

Thank you so much for the offer, I'd be happy to get the measurements to you, the only issue is that the seat post is also currently seized in the down tube from rust. I'm tackling both issues simultaneously. So once I get it out, I will definitely reach out to you.

I realize how anticlimactic that is, sorry.

Yup. This was just a quick drawing to illustrate the part. The real one will have a threaded side and a countersunk bolt side.

Hi again, so I got the seat post out, unfortunately I can't send PMs because I haven't posted enough. If you'd like I could post my spam email here, then you could message me there, and then I could provide with my real email address?

Thanks again for offering to do this.
