Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

TCR Advanced 1 Disc vs Advanced Pro 1 Disc 2021

Hi guys,

First post, I am glad I joined such a great forum.

I bought tcr advanced 1 disc 2021 and I still have an option to pay extra AUS2.1k to swap it with advanced pro 1 disc 2021.

Alternatively I can keep the bike and spend extra 2.1k to buy new set of carbon wheels. I would buy deCadence wheels 49mm deep, 1400g heavy. Which option would make a better bike overall? Which bike would be lighter?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Are you in Australia? I don't think the models are exactly the same here, at least I couldn't find the Advanced 1 Disc, w/o Pro in the name. Are wheels the only difference? Giant's own brand wheels are pretty nice compared to what comes on other brands.

i have that budget to spend and i was just wondering what would get me an overall better bike for that money. Both wheel are lighter than pr2 that come on my bike. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Well, that depends.
Do you need 30 percent more torsional steering stiffness? Are you sprinting for the finish or cornering hard in the most demanding conditions? Would you like to ride with more power and confidence?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then OD2 might be the right choice for you.

thanks mate. I'm just a beginner so probably no. Is the difference noticeable?

is it worth paying 2k for pro 1 or would i get an overall better bike if i just upgrade wheels? The wheels would be decadence 49mm 1430g.

I certainly don't have a problem with a new rider buying a nice bike! Anyway, neither of these are egregiously expensive. What I would suggest is to keep the bike you have and wait awhile for the wheel upgrade. It will be months, maybe years before the stock wheels will hold you back. By then you will have a better understanding of what you want in your upgraded wheelset. Enjoy your new bike!

There are more than just the wheel difference between the two bikes. You also get a power meter, different bars, stem and as you mentioned the OD system. The question is do you need all this extra stuff? The power meter will mean buying a bike computer to actually use the data. A new Garmin or Wahoo will be about another 4-5 hundred Australian dollars added to the two grand plus you are spending.

I am with Shelbyfv's advice above on this one.
