Bike Size
I have been given a Giant TCR which is a size L. However, I should be a size M/L. Is this going to be a big problem? The bike feels OK when I ride it and I do not have any trouble with stand over height etc. I have got the saddle height right (leg bend of 25-30 degrees) and adjusted the saddle so my knee is over the pedal spindle. I am only a recreational rider so I am not going to be training / racing or anything. Would it be OK?

Sounds fine in the lower body. If it's too big for you in the upper body, you'll be uncomfortably stretched out to reach the brakes... that'll cause back and neck pain after a while.

Standover height is only one key measurement. The other is length. Can you reach the handlebars without a lot of stretching? Can you move the saddle forward? Can you adjust the handlebar so that there is less reach? I think you will be fine.

Comfort on a bike is a personal thing. I once had a bike that the bike shop said was to big and would have been better for someone around 6' or larger (I'm 5'9). I had barely any clearance when I stood over it (if any), but when riding it felt like I could ride all day.

Got a tape measure , if not the bike shop should have one.. M/L mean So much less than measured distances..

Yeah, don't over analyze it. It was free. If it feels comfortable it is...and honestly you may only know once you've put some miles on it and then even then a tweak here or there could make the difference. So just ride and after about 40 miles or so of various real world use, see what you think.
