New crack
How do I figure out the size of crank, the part that holds the detachable rings and other end holds a pedal. So far I know it's tapered: )
I pulled some threads during repair on 85 Wyoming Raleigh touring, and need to find a replacement cause the next time it comes off might the last.

Based on the age of the bike, I gather you have a square taper cotterless crank. These are fairly standard, and use the same remover (generic square taper crank remover). There are exceptions, but I doubt you'll run in to them.
The length is easured on centers, from the pedal to the bottom bracket spindles -- in that era most likely 170mm.
If you do strip the crank, you can remove it by various alternate methods, my favorite being Jacob's Chuck removal wedges which cost less than $10.00 a pair, and work about as well as the standard pullers.
So, I'd do nothing yet, and cross the stripped crank bridge when you get to it.
