NuVinci is interesting concept but the hub is as heavy as a Pinion P.18. Perhaps with upgraded design & materials they could cut the weight to something reasonable? Moot point perhaps, their website seems to indicate they're concentrating on the e-bike market where the convenience will help & weight is not as crucial.

It's sort of an E6B-type thing that hangs from the handlebars.

Why not get a touring bike with a P18 gearbox and add a Rohloff 500/14 rear hub. With that combination if you can't find the right gear then you shouldn't even be riding a bike

These are for 1x12 drivetrains.
I'm waiting for 14 cogs for a 2x14 drivetrain: 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 20 22 25 28 32 36

And it is cheaper than a Rohloff.

Cassettes are more reliable than Rohloff, more durable too. I wonder if something like this at a quarter the price, will kill the rohloff?

Bernays won
I see it as Industry pushing more, and y'all follow, and not meeting consumer demand.. see: Bernays
Used Rohloff hubs are just fine, usually.... I got 2 used ones for the price of 1 new one..
that 1 cog can be flipped over * doubling its wear life. and costs less than your next 12 cog cassette
especially the new snap ring R'off cogs
*older screw on 13t that was not true, new 13t snap ring splined cogs can be flipped over..
Taiwan Vs Germany..

But at least I still have the Rohloff on one of my other bikes, and it is not skipping any gears.

What I meant was if a cassette cog starts to wear its not that difficult to replace it and carry on. Theres nothing user serviceable on a Rohloff, you have to return it to Germany to be serviced, which might be inconvenient if you are in Outer Mongolia.

To be fair, you'd have to consider the odds on getting a 12 speed cassette in Mongolia also. Or a 6...

Your Rohloff goes down, you have to send it to Germany. Your trip is over unless you can get a new bike.

No Rohloff has a US service center in Richmond Cal , now, it had one not far from there 10+ years ago.. a 1 man shop, then...
Personally, I go several years and get the oil wholesale in 250 ml bottles,
as I don't work in computers .. but bike shops.
you take home more money than I , Sop stop complaining.

I was just trying to point out that the new 12 speed cassette is much cheaper and likely more reliable than a Rohloff. Still some people like them and thats okay too.
I work contract in a competetive industry where cost of living is high, I don't make enough for expensive bikes, thats just the way it is.

I own several derailleur bikes, one Rohloff bike, each has advantages and disadvantages. For the Outer Mongolia trip you cite, I would take my Rohloff bike. Yes, there is a tiny chance of failure, but there are lots of other things that can go wrong too.
Regarding the 12 speed cassette under discussion, for derailleur bike for touring I am quite content with eight speed cassettes and a triple crank. The entire eight speed cassette/triple crank drive train with shifters costs less than the 12 speed cassette.
I was wondering why you were so down on Rohloffs, thanks for explaining. I was starting to wonder if you were one of the one or two percent of Rohloff owners that actually had a mechanical problem with them.

Ok, I thot it had to go to Germany. Still from Outer Mongolia its much of a muchness.

10-speed is the sweet spot
...in terms of range, price, ubiquity, and maturity. Got 1x10 on my CC tourer, and that's all i need.

You don't get it, do you?
yes, of course. But the point of Rohloff is bragging rights. Some here pooh-pooh, sneer at the expensive speed 1x12 rat-race yet they are the ones who, with no sense of irony or self-awareness, fell for the 1x14 boondaggle.

If you have an extra $1000 to spend (I do not), better to upgrade to a carbon/bamboo frame than an expensive, finicky, over engineered piece of German agricultural equipment.

Please do not take my non-response as concurrence, I just choose not to argue with you as you have clearly decided that you know more about Rohloffs than those of us that have toured on them.
