Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I use a triple-monitor setup for work, though I don't think I'll post a pic.

Replaced my dual last year. Really like the way you can partition the screen. Allows me to have multiple working documents up at one time (like on dual), but configured in a way that is more productive for me. For example, if I'm writing a brief, I can have mine as well as the one I'm responding to up, along with a third document in full page view. Or, as I usually do, have file explorer and Outlook both open while I work on two documents. It really has been a productivity benefit, and saves me paper costs. It's purely a work monitor and not well suited to gaming.

I thought about a 3rd for work, but really don’t need it. I do quick data pulls with less than 50 lines of code if anything. Mostly it’s just one task based monitor and another for email/MS teams. Occasionally I mock up wireframes in PowerBI to visually demonstrate my vision to my staff, but that’s about it.

they’re both hooked to both my company laptop and personal desktop

Ditto, mine is laptop + 2 monitors.

I use 2 at home. Don't want more, but never going back to less.

BTW, any of you folks who have built a computer from scratch have my respect. I'm entertaining the idea of a new desktop here in the next year or so or doing some major upgrades to my current one.

I've dipped my toe into the pool of scratch building and I'm not sure I want to go any deeper. The sheer number of options is paralyzing TBH.

I've worn a neck gaiter three times this year at 28°-35°F and wished I didn't have it every time.

You prune the options HARD and then it’s straightforward. The process is simpler than some Lego kits. As with bikes, however, it is not cheaper than a factory build, just better.

The key is knowing what branches to prune. An electronic arborist I am not.

For my uses, a store-bought complete is probably the best option.

Still might try throwing a SSD and some more RAM into mine and see if it will make me happy enough to delay the inevitable.

The fact that there's an upgraded power supply and graphics card already installed makes me want to upgrade rather than replace, but given that was a few years ago I might just be falling into some sunk-cost silliness.

I rode for an hour on Zwift yesterday, but then yesterday was the day we finally did Thanksgiving dinner (too many balls in the air on Thursday!), so in the end I only broke even on calories. Probably shouldn't have had those 3 pieces of pie.

It was so cold in the garage - probably low 50s - that I started out wearing a jersey over my bibs and didn't turn the fan on till 20 minutes in. Still ended up drenched in sweat.

I don't know squat about computers other than how to use them. For any networking and server needs, I have a "guy" for that. Mostly, however, I buy configured laptops from Dell for the office and whatever the folks at home want.

I have some friends that are big into building their own rigs for gaming and A/V work, and they have some impressive stuff.

Building is easy if you're not a dunce. Decide what you're going to do. Choose your CPU and maker appropriate for your use and go from there. If you have a Microcenter near you, you can get some screaming deals. If you're willing to cannibalize your current computer, you might be able to carry over a good chunk of it and just replace the motherboard, CPU, GPU and upgrade to an SSD. What's in the current machine?

Very nice. I'm tempted to get one of those for auto racing sims, but I don't have enough time for auto racing sims it seems

My favorite setup when I had to generate a lot of documents was a 27" in portrait mode for the document, then two 24s in landscape stacked up for research and reference screens.

Well, The Older Boy snagged the last Strawberry Rhubarb pie in the store, and because The Younger Boy doesn't eat fruit, I had to get a fruitless alternative, so I chose Pecan, and The Younger Boy's Girlfriend made us a Pumpkin Chiffon pie, I had to have some of that, too.

Thank goodness Thanksgiving is only once a year (plus a couple days of leftovers), or I'd need to ride 2 hours in the garage every day till Spring.

Dell 49". Cost as much as an inexpensive carbon wheelset. Camera is extra.

Since it is business equipment, Uncle Sam helped pay for it.

In the vast majority of cases that can make it better than many new budget computers. SSDs are silly fast (good ones, anyway).

Since heavy-duty data crunching is part of my job description, I should look into getting one of those on the company dime.
