Cycling jeans
just thought I'd share with you folks that I discovered Levis 505 jeans. The only pants i could ride with before were dress slacks. But the 505s are light and loose enough for commuting. I still would prefer shorts but work won't let me. Costco has em for 29.99

I wear jeans...
I think there are just people afraid to ride in comfortable pants.
How long is your commute?

People find it hard to ride in jeans? The only problem I've had is my saddle wearing holes through my jeans through years of use. (I ride in jeans every day.)

I've worn my Levis taking bikes on test rides. If my commute was less than 5 miles, I'd probably commute more often in jeans - well, in fair weather that's not too hot or humid.
I don't like wearing them when it rains, though.

Jeans, ugg, no thanks. 18 miles of hot/humid/rain/sweaty? Not. Can't imagine being able to pedal or move around well. 5 miles of mellow riding? Maybe. I wear mt bike shorts or them with tights. YRMV.

I see your 505s and raise you my pair of American Eagle Active Flex jeans...they contain a small percentage of spandex and have a bit of stretch to them. Looking at them, they appear to be normal jeans (although its easy to size down if you like the "tight" look) but are as comfortable as sweat pants (okay, maybe more like yoga pants).

I'm a big fan of the Levi's Commuter line, found for dirt cheap on Steap & Cheap:
Urban Cyclist - 45% to 85% Off | Steep & Cheap

I couldn't imagine riding more than a couple of miles in jeans in the middle of a Phoenix summer. When you're putting in miles, wearing proper cycling attire helps.

Just wondering who lets you work in jeans, yet not in shorts?

Marking this thread for future reference. Good tips in here. Useful for those of us who are thinking about commuting.

Levis bluejeans are the greatest pants ever created.
You can wear them everywhere, all the time. You can wear them on the freaking space shuttle if need be and probably should as any other intelligent life forms out there would want to know about them immediately.
Why would anyone think you can't wear them commuting on a bicycle?

I think I may have seen coworkers riding into the office building in jeans, once or twice. These individuals had relatively little sweat. I bet they ride 3 miles tops.
My commute ride is in the 12-13 mile range, most of it on the Mt. Vernon Trail in VA to the 14 St. bridge to DC. I can now recognize some of the regular commuters on the MVT riding from VA to DC and back. None of them wear jeans. The only cyclists I ever see in jeans are riding Capital Bikeshare bikes and look like obvious tourists.
I have no doubt there is a commuter out there who will ride over 10 miles in jeans, in 90+ F heat and respectable humidity (dew point over 75F) - I have yet to see that person. When it's hot and humid, jeans start to stick to your lower body because of your pooled up sweat, and you may not find them so comfortable.

Jeans are not a problem if you ride a recumbent. Bent dont demand you buy high priced bike shorts to protect you from your bike.

8.5 miles each way for my commute here, and I tried it in jeans. No way. I have moved to proper cycling clothing and my comfort level is off the charts. There may be a day or two in the early spring or late fall where jeans would be nice. In the Michigan humid summer, no way. Caught in a downpour? Absolutely not.
I don't work in a speedo, I don't swim in a tuxedo, and I don't wear jeans to commute on my bike. I also won't ride a recumbent bike. Said it.
