To hook the chain on when you remove the rear wheel. Nifty!

It's drilled for rack/fenders.

i have one on the trek and i used it once. idunno what its supposed to help cuz it doesnt make getting the wheel on/off any easier, nor does it keep your hands cleaner since you have to put the chain on and take it off of there manually

Maybe so the chain doesn't touch the ground and get additional grime on it?
I have never used one so i dont know the specifics, like if it even keeps the chain entirely off the ground

The tab is used for keeping the chain from hanging down and in the way while the wheel is removed. Kinda like them when I work on customers bikes. Old feature as I don't see them to often.

I've got them on a bunch of my vintage geared bikes, and it definitely keeps the chain from messing up the chainstay when you remove the rear wheel. It also makes it easier to get the freewheel onto the derailleur and chain when installing the wheel. I love them and wish my newer geared bikes had them.

So i rode my older geared bike into work today and i got super excited that it might have one. Went and checked. No Dice.
Not a big deal, but it definitely seems like a handy little feature.

Actually, they used to sell plastic clip-on hooks. IDK if you can get them anymore though.

This is my current road bike. Now the saddle and tape is black though.

Soon it will be converted to a FG with an ENO hub. Most of the components on this bike will be replaced with silver ones, and this will be used for my short 8 mile commute. The 6800 Ultegra components will go onto the custom frame I'm building.

I had one on an old British Falcon that I converted to FG years ago. They are pretty handy though, for sure.

Isn't the hub-bub here over such a small detail amazing? Nevertheless - the one on my old Bridgestone has come in very handy innumerable times over the years...

Small detail, big deal. It also cones in very handy when fixing a rear flat on the road. It keeps the chain in place on the derailler pulleys and keeps it from falling off the chainring.

Didn't even know the Rove had a sparkle job (at least, not to this extent)! Maybe it just needs to be really sunny and really clean?

Pretty excited to get a rack and bag for this thing.

Great build! Those are great tires. I had the opportunity to ride with Bruce Gordon this weekend. Nice guy.

Some new pics of my old Nishiki 1x7 rigid mtb. Note the nifty chain holder on the inside of the seatstay to keep the chain from falling off the chainring and derailleur jockey pulley when removing the rear wheel. Also note the Tange Prestige markings on the steel fork legs. This frame is a mixture of aluminum and steel tubing that is bolted / screwed together.

Very cool...

I always liked elevated chainstays and Aliens - which IIRC had some connection with Mantis, a bike that I really lusted after back in the day. BTW...there were all steel Aliens somewhere along the way.

Somewhere in the middle of my ride from SF to LA a few weeks back. Love this bike, never had a single issue over 550miles other than needing a slight rear wheel retrue after a day of riding on some ****ty central CA roads.
