Goo Gone worked well, way better than acetone. Acetone seemed to evaporate so fast it wouldn't get much work done. The Goo Gone would stay and soak in and get the gunk softened up.

I have had good luck removing adhesive residue mechanically with tape. My goto is a good quality duct tape, but gorilla tape might work well to remove its own residue. Simply cut a piece of the tape, stick it on the residue you want to remove while keeping ahold of the tape, and remove the tape. Keep repeating this and the residue will soften from the slight heat generated from the repeated sticking and pulling, and will eventually let loose and remain on the tape. I use this technique frequently on all types of adhesive residue, and it leaves a very clean surface without solvents - might be worth a try.

Rediscovered the same thing just today. Had a flat on an old bike I bought a few months ago. Of course the rim tape was shot, so broke out the goo gone and wooden scraper to remove the old adhesive.
