Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think that there's also a difference between being in relative proximity and actually handling common objects. If my kid wants to go for bike ride around the park with a friend, I'm fine with that, but tossing a football back and forth? Nah. Same with baseball and basketball - people wipe their faces all the time, and then the ball gets passed around; just cut to the chase and lick each other's phones, why don't ya?

The only effect absence or return of group riding has on me is that it changes the maximum number of people passing me at any given time. I rode with a local club for a couple years, every Saturday and Sunday morning, and yeah, the speed, the camaraderie, the sound of a couple dozen drive trains - it was intoxicating! That and the feeling of POWER - not the watts, but rather the power of numbers.

But it burned me out on cycling. It was too easy to find an excuse not to ride as winter came and even easier not to get started again in spring. I ended up not riding for about 4 years. So I ride by myself anymore. Which is fine, because I don't really like people IRL that much.

Airborne route >>>> fomite. Catch enforces distance. Personally, I would give them a bottle of hand sanitizer and tell them knock themselves out.

Agree the airborne route is the problem.

With the debate about going back to school, I often hear about how some schools are going to be cleaning/sanitizing classrooms frequently. That is a LOT of work for VERY LOW yield. Just wear the masks and keep social distancing. Sad!

I'm still not exactly excited about the idea of riding with others, but then again I've been riding solo pretty much the whole time I've been riding so that's never been a big part of my life.

Ironically I remember this past winter thinking that this year's season I'd start doing regular group rides
Until we have data from the pro testing that shows that riders who test positive don’t transmit it within the peloton, I’m only riding with people I know are at least as invested in safety as I am. AG’s coach’s wife had blood cancer and a marrow transplant - if he wants to do a ride, I’ll go with him. One of his athletes, who’s actually AG’s coworker as well, was in Cancun last week. To him I’d say “love you buddy, see you after we’re comfortable with the vaccines”.

Yeah, the few group rides I did years ago were super fun, I totally get why people do it.

The biggest thing I wish I had was a reliable group of friends to ride with - out of my tiny little friend group I'm the only one that rides road bikes.

I'm usually pretty okay by myself but if there were other people counting on me showing up to a ride I'd probably ride a lot more, especially on weekends. Not sure what's gotten into me but the last couple of weekends I've had zero motivation to ride.

My 92 Japanamount is an instant accelerator. It was the first thing I noticed when I got it. The thing I still notice, every time I pick it up, is how light it is. 21 pounds with a Brooks saddle mounted

It's essentially public health theater for the poor scared parents. My heart goes out to everyone with kids at home right now. These are terrible choices to have to make.

Tube feeding a person with capacity to refuse is prosecutable as battery in every state I've worked in.

Precisely. League officials wanted no part of playing this season, and in the face of mounting opposition the commish retired. So a new organization was formed by some of the hotheads. The suggested precautions were so lame and unenforceable as to confirm they were just a bunch of delusionists*. A couple of good friends are playing, and a couple more like me aren't. God bless 'em. By the time you reach 70 and 80 you're supposed to have wisdom enough to restrain whatever lingering testosterone you may still have.

* you heard this new word here first.

Just to be clear, you're saying if you need to go that high to tighten it up, once you've tightened the stem bolts, back off the preload bolt?

My question is, do you really want the front wheel off the ground when you're doing this? Because it seems to me then you are fighting gravity to pull your fork up snug into the bottom race. If it's standing on the front wheel, you're really mostly taking up the slack at the top.

I don't know. I never fiddled with headsets till last month the Bianchi's was loose, so I watched a couple videos and did what they showed.

I know that airborne is a problem, but it's interesting to hear little concern for touch transmission. Much of the emphasis early was, "wash your hands for ," "this virus can survive X days on a surface," "don't go to playgrounds - they're petri dishes," etc, etc. Being an avid avoider of the news, I hadn't noticed a shift.

Oh, and FWIW - giving a kid (my kid?) a bottle of hand sanitizer and expecting him to use it without being hounded... yeah not gonna happen.

I hear you, and I'm slowly coming around, but at my age I feel more comfortable being cautious.

A lot of the early concern was prompted by an NEJM article about the survival of SARS-CoV-2 on various surfaces, but they were REALLY pouring it on them, far more than you'd expect in real life. And over time we've learned - through contact tracing in countries that didn't totally screw up the response - that most of the transmission seems to be close contacts indoors. Very few traceable to outdoor contacts or surface contamination. BUT, since everyone sticks their fingers in their face holes all the time, the hand hygiene part is still valid.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons that I stayed away from even my small groups rides for almost two months after they'd restarted - I wanted to get a feel for how/if they were actually practicing precautions. Group chat showed people excusing themselves after showing symptoms, a few going in for testing, and keeping distance at truncated "recovery" sessions afterwards, etc. At that point I felt better about any additional exposure risk with the group.
