Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back to work today. Looking at the traffic, it seems I am one of very few fools who is working.

In a former life 40 years ago, I smoked cigars and a pipe. White Owl cigars were beneath me even though I made a meager salary at the time.

I've been binging, for the second time, The Civil War by Ken Burns on Netflix. The photography alone is worth the watch.

I'm in. Barely anyone on the road, but still saw a near crash.

Any of my fellow Addictionites have an iPhone Xs to Xr? I have had three iPhone 7 the last few years and the third one just died after less than a week.

Apple had a defective I7 build, Model A1660, and will replace it free but they replace it with another A1660, refurbed, of course. one would think they would replace it with a different I7 build but they don't. My carrier, Verizon, wants me to upgrade, of course, and I'm not against it but the Xr is reputed to have poor sound quality and the Xs is ridiculously expensive.

Anyway, I'm going to have to fight with Verizon and/or Apple today, I'm afraid.

Indeed. VERY humid here. Like pea soup.

Count me among the fools. There were literally about a half dozen people on the bus this morning.

Yeah, I console myself by saying it's too humid to ride anyway. If I say it enough maybe I will believe it.

And we're having lovely weather. Yesterday it was nice enough to ride even in the afternoon. Today might be too. An interesting turn of fate--since I made the decision to not push it anymore on the bike, I have not been on the (road)bike and don't feel the pressure to get out there on a daily basis. I had blood work this morning and thus could not have coffee until after eight. By the time I had it made and poured, I found I could have gone on without it. Sadly, I did not.

Mrs. rpen and I both had the newest shingles vaccinations on Monday. Her second round and my first. Both of us have had horrible reactions. Chills, fever, muscular aches. And in my case burning urination. So I looked up the side effects and found they are supposed to be very rare. Yet everyone I have talked to has had a similar experience to ours. WTF

The French have a saying for bridging a mid-week holiday all the way to the weekend: “Faire le pont.” It is the standard practice there.

Wife had flu-like symptoms with her first one. I'm dreading it and actively procrastinating.

I tell all patients to be aware they may have severe arm pain and/or feverish reaction to this shot. It's still worth getting but time it so it won't ruin an important event.

Ack. Like Summer?

Wife just texted me and said local Rite Aid is taking spouses of people on waiting list and today is a good day.

Will NSAIDs reduce the chance of a good take?

If you don't have a major event planned for the next 3 days, just do it. OK to take tylenol 1g Q8H to blunt the cytokine storm, I don't believe it will affect the immunogenicity of the vaccine.

Thanks. CDC statement says APAP and NSAIs are okay. Now, to decide whether a weekend ride constitutes a major event. Looks like a **** weekend for sailing.
