Single speed overhaul

Hello,

I am fairly new to bike repair, I have had my single speed for couple of years and neglected the servicing I am hoping to get some guidance:

1) I have a 16T freewheel and used the Park tool FR-6 to remove it. I wanted to know if there are any other freewheel that is recommended I could buy - I am from Toronto, I am finding it hard to get a replacement

2) I also need to change the chain, I understand I need to resize any chain and have a 42T chainring - I was wondering how/what chain I should buy

Any help is really appreciated

If you want high quality, White Industries Freewheel and as far as chains for 1/8 I would go Izumi, DID or some of the nicer KMC chains.

I am running a White Industries trials Freewheel and DID Track Racing Pro chain on a Sugino Cool messenger chainring and it is a nice smooth drivetrain.

Shimano BMX freewheels (not the sub-15t metric thread versions) are decent quality and affordable. Better than the Dicta, not as costly as the White Industries.

+1 on White industries. I only run fixed, but I have never heard anything bad about White frewheels.

Ride Safe,

Thanks everyone for the reply - I really appreciate it.

Is the sealed freewheel like White industries better and does it lasts longer? I would rather invest in something if it's going to last.

Is there a difference in 18T vs 16T freewheel - I have a 42T chainring. I found an 18T White Industries Freewheel
https://www.redbike.ca/product/white...wheel-1818.htm - is that compatible with my 42T chainring.

How is this Shimano SF-1200 -
https://bikedepot.com/product/shiman...ab-description

I found this chain https://www.amazon.ca/ES410JB-Single.../dp/B07RSG5HWR is this what Izumi chain that is recommended there is also a KMC Z410 Bicycle Chain - not sure if that is good

Thank you once again,

$160CAD seems high for a White Freewheel. They normally go for about $80-$100 US.

I'm not sure, but I think the point of the $20 price point is that when it's done, you toss it and buy another one.

I'm on my 4th since I started riding SS and buying from Retrogression.

Box Components Buzz freewheels are really good as well. Can be hard to get in Canada - I've got one on my son's bike. Probably being replaced with a cassette hub soon.
Profile Racing Elite is probably the best you're going to get for thread-on freewheels.

I just pulled apart my ACS Main Drive freewheel - it stopped wheeling - was free in both directions. Luckily happened during a game of foot-down with my son, not coming out of the start gate. Pawls were just jammed. I cleaned out the old grease, about to reassemble. These are cheaper than the Shimano, better than the Dicta. The Main Drive are not as good as the Crossfire, but the Crossfire need a special 6-prong tool.

Other than the bearings, there are only 8 parts. And that includes the shims.

Shows the pawls
