Shimano 105 vs Claris compatibility?
Bike: 1996/97 Fuji Roubaix
3x8 drive line from late 1996.
rear Shimano 105 RD-1050
front Shimano 105 FD-1057 road triple clamp on 1 1/8" bottom pull
crank Shimano 105 FC 1057 road triple 30-42-52
sti Shimano 105 ST-1055 3x8 (buggered beyond use)
installing brand new STI Shimano Claris 3x8. ST-2000R & ST-2030L
The rear works great..
The front doesn't have sufficient throw to get on the 52t ring. I have the limit screw backed out plenty. It shifts fine if I pull on the cable. The der is on straight and at the proper height.
Why is this not compatible? Both shifters are Shimano, triples, for 8 speed.
I suppose the next step is another front derailleur. Have any suggestions for a good replacement?

If you leave too much clearance when setting up the low limit you may run out of throw at the other end. Also ensure that the cable is properly routed and correctly attached to the clamp screw.

I believe the geometry of the older front derailleurs was different from newer ones. I had the same 3x8 105 group on my '96 Litespeed. The FD-1057 front derailleur had an actuating arm so long it almost hit the rear tire in the big chainring and required very careful setting of the high limit screw and even tire choice. Newer Shimano front derailleurs have shorter arm which gives better tire clearance and requires less cable pull to move the cage a given amount. They all worked fine on that same bike with no clearance issues at all. Your Claris 3X front STI is probably designed for the shorter cable pull and won't move the older fd far enough. You probably need a Claris fd.

If it is the arm length, in theory if you can attach the cable to the pivot side of the pinch bolt, it might give more cage movement. Provided it is not on that side already.
You shouldn’t have to do this as I have run that shifter with older 3x, but who knows.
